BULVERDE — Officers who searched the home of a suspect in the attempted killing of a Schertz police officer found weapons, military equipment and a secret bunker Tuesday.
The search came a day after a Brooke Army Medical Center spokesman said Michael Patrick Kennedy, 48, had been released after being treated for three gunshot wounds suffered in a shootout Thursday night with Schertz patrol officer Richard Kunz.
Kennedy is in the Bexar County Jail, where he is being held on a charge of attempted capital murder. His bail is $500,000.
Kunz pulled Kennedy over near the northbound rest area south of New Braunfels at 11:38 p.m. Thursday and was confronted with a weapon as he approached the vehicle.
The officer, faced with a fusillade of more than 30 shots from an AK-47 assault rifle and a 9mm automatic pistol, emptied his Glock service weapon in response. He was uninjured.
Schertz Public Information Officer Debbie Gildea said Kunz remained on paid administrative leave Tuesday.
Comal County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Tommy Ward said his office assisted the Texas Rangers, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the San Antonio Police Department’s bomb squad in a search of the Kennedy residence, which is located in the 31000 block of Longhorn Trail in Bulverde.
The search began at 6:30 a.m. with members of the bomb squad moving into the residence looking for possible booby traps or bombs, Ward said.
Firefighters and paramedics from the Bulverde Volunteer Fire Department and Bulverde/Spring Branch EMS stood by during the day-long search.
“We weren’t going to take any chances,” Ward said. “We were looking for evidence consistent with the evidence found at the scene of the shooting in Schertz.”
Weapons taken from Kennedy’s car included the AK-47, the 9mm pistol and a .380 pistol that was not used in the assault on Kunz.
Ward said numerous other firearms and a stockpile of ammunition were found in his home.
“We also discovered at the residence there was a bunker dug at the back that was fortified out of earth, steel and railroad ties,” Ward said. “It was disguised from the top so it was difficult to locate.”
There was more inside the house, the detective said. “He also had in a room in the house a fortification in the form of a steel-plated wall,” Ward said. “He had a Kevlar helmet and a chemical protective mask in the residence and in the bunker,” Ward said.
The shooting incident remains under investigation by the Texas Rangers. Investigators have not said where Kennedy was going the night Kunz stopped him.
