Schertz Police Officer Escapes Injury; Suspect Wounded

SAN ANTONIO -- A Schertz police officer escaped serious injury late Thursday despite a hail of gunfire from two weapons allegedly fired by a 48-year-old Comal County man he had stopped for speeding.

Schertz Police Chief Stephen Starr said Officer Richard Kunz pulled over Michael Kennedy for speeding on north Interstate 35 near FM 1103 at 11:30 p.m. when the officer noticed Kennedy was carrying a handgun.

Seconds later, Kennedy then allegedly took out an assault-style rifle out of his Toyota Corolla and emptied 30 rounds from an AK-47 and then from a .9mm handgun, Starr said.

Kunz, hidden behind his cruiser, managed to fire off 16 shots, three of them hit Kennedy in the back and neck. Kennedy was listed Friday in serious condition at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Kunz was not hurt but his patrol car was riddled with 30 bullets.

"Our officer was extremely lucky," Starr said. "We do a lot of firearms training here, and he reverted to the training that we initiated here at the department and everything fell into place. And that's what we look for."

Starr said three weapons and several magazines of ammunition, including a sidearm in a holster, were recovered from Kennedy's car.

Kennedy faces attempted capital murder charges.

The Texas Rangers are investigating.

Kunz was placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation is ongoing.

Lucky this LEO could shoot and supress under fire !

Many bubbas have big words on the range, but when the target shoots back it is a different story.

I beg to differ... this suspect survived.
Suspect was a terrible shot.
This guy got off with just a scratch... he should be pushing up daisies.

Looks like the German (Kunz) was bit calmer and more professional than the Irish hothead (Kennedy) (Michael Patrick , no less. The family takes their Irishness seriously). Of course if this guy was a typical Kennedy, he was probably three sheets to the wind at the time of the shooting.

BTW I'm a Kunz myself, although it's not my last name, it was my maternal grandmother's maiden name, and I have the "classic" Kunz look, although my general body shape is more like larger version of my father's. He was built like a chimpanzee, I'm more like a lowland gorilla. :) My great-great Kunz grandparents (She was a Wiengard(sic)) family came over in the 1860s from the area near Heidelberg, and settled (eventually) in southeast Nebraska.

Here's a 40mm. Do they look like this??

Perhaps more like the gun in the background in the image below?

The guy on the left is holding a clip of 40mm ammunition. It's inside an AC-130. The gun in the foreground is a little bigger, a 105mm.

Get real. The suspect was armed with a semi-automatic carbine and a handgun, and thus was able to lay down considerable fire. He wasn't all that bad a shot, which you can tell by looking at the bullet holes in the cruiser. THey aren't spread all over hell and gone, but are pretty conentrated on the drivers position, although he did tend to shoot a little low. To get any hits at all, with a hangun, while not getting hit yourself, is, in this situation, doing right fine. There's more to combat shooting than just marksmanship.

Officer Kunz.

Definitely a relative. Same eyebrows and "bridgeless" nose, not to mention, as my mother calls them, those piggy Kunz eyes. Except for the ears, and hair color it's almost like looking in the mirror. Although my head is a bit more bulged above eye level, although that may be a visual effect due to my "Dumbo" ears. In fact he looks more like me than most of my maternal first cousins, or even my brother. Looks even more like what my brother's son (who looks like me!) will look like in a few years. Wow!

You missed my point.

If I were this LEO, I would have made sure this guy didn't live to shoot someone else before I approached his carcass. He let this scum - who shot 50 rounds at him - live to shoot another day.

This suspect should be dead.

It seems he had a bunker, and more weapons at his house

Who amongst us doesn't?

Well I don't have a bunker. But not many houses in this area have root cellars, or even storm shelters, anymore. (nor basements!) 'Course I don't know that I'd feel much need for a storm shelter in the greater San Antonio area anyway, but a "root" cellar might come in handy. As might a fallout shelter, come to think of it.

I guess I did. But OTOH, I don't want unresisting perps shot by LEOs. I'd prefer they be hung, or fried, but the long gurney ride will do.

DOE has a shoot house at ABQ's CTA facility....When I went through it they had a guy named Grady there that would follow you with an MP5 filled with blanks . He also was dropping flash bangs and DOD grade grenade simulators as sirens and lights flashed. Do that a few times and not gray out with tunnel vision. Really educational to watch a video of what you thought you were doing during yer run through the course.

Even after a few times through it the stress made folks do some really silly stuff.....speed load take two shots , two steps and speed load again ?!?!? Albeit training, it was sobering. Folks (bubbas) who think they can wade in and hang with the animals better rethink the issue.

Theres a reason they call it sh*t'n go blind time !

This LEO, albeit 16 rounds later got the job done.....

Wonder if Kunz was using a bolt-action Italian Manlicher-Carcano carbine?

This photo makes it clear the guy was shooting up the car, and not the officer behind the car door.

A cafe at Manzano ?? Who opened it DOE or the contractor ?

What are they using the mountain for these days after they moved the boomage across from the base golf course and underground ?

Contractor, pretty good burgers. The CTA is still in use, and I think they use some of the storage areas for training.

I've only been out there a couple times, most of my work is out at Area 5, Area 3, and occasionally the Pulsed power area.

All I remember that was good that far out on the base was the golf course bar, Thai waitresses and pitchers of cold draft beer.......:o)

Those were good range days !
