Nicole DeHuff, an actress who played Teri Polo's sister in Meet the Parents, has died of causes related to pneumonia. She was 30.
The actress died Feb. 16 in Hollywood, four days after she reportedly checked into a Los Angeles hospital, was misdiagnosed and sent home with orders to take Tylenol.
When her condition worsened, she returned to the hospital and was prescribed antibiotics for bronchitis and again sent home. Two days later, paramedics were called to her home after she collapsed, gasping for breath. By the time she reached the hospital, she was unconscious and passed away soon after.
Meet the Parents marked DeHuff's feature-film debut. She played Deborah Byrnes, the sister whose wedding prompts Gaylord "Greg" Focker's (Ben Stiller) visit to girlfriend Pam Byrne's (Polo) childhood home to attend the ceremony and, as suggested by the title, meet the parents. Hilarity ensues.
In one of the movie's most memorable scenes, a Speedo-clad Stiller spikes a volleyball into DeHuff's face, breaking the bride-to-be's nose and cementing his own unpopularity.
DeHuff also appeared in 2004's Suspect Zero with Ben Kingsley and in an independent film called Killing Cinderella.
She also starred in the as yet unreleased independent film Unbeatable Harold, directed by her husband, Ari Palitz, and costarring Dylan McDermott and Gordon Michaels.
On the small screen, DeHuff had roles in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Court, The Practice, Dragnet, Without a Trace and Monk. She also appeared in the TV movie See Arnold Run.
A native of Oklahoma, DeHuff graduated from the Carnegie Mellon University acting program.
She is survived by Palitz, her husband of four years, as well as her sister, her mother and her father.

I believe a cold virus got his (Henson's) heart. This also happened to a mother of six, in her early thirties, in my old neighborhood. It's hard to accept, but a cold virus can kill you or cripple you. It's just that it happens rarely.
Was there an Xray to rule out pneumonia? Look at how quick people are to jump to the conclusion that evil was done her. After they drool over her picture for seven or eight minutes, of course.

While my thoughts are with Ms. Dehuff's family, its a shame that her career high point was a stinking pile of sh-t like "Meet the Parents." I guess that's better than appearing in "Meet the Fockers," the WORST movie I have seen in the past year.

Not true. I get into the dr now before I start having fluid build up in my lungs. I have scars in my lungs from waiting too long in the past. Also shows up in blood tests.

Wow! You should publish your results -- the sooner the better. Think of all the lives you will save. "Stop going to your doctor now". Wait until the MSM gets a hold of your statistics!

Interesting, related tidbit to my visit today to the doc where I was found to have pneumonia: First visit to this doc. Had to fill out the forms. Had a section on "Preventative Measures." In this section it was asking if I owned guns and if I kept them away from children. I am not kidding---it actually asked that. If I wasn't on death's door and coughing some blood, I'd walk outta there. I scratched out that question.

I'm not really a doctor but I stayed in a Holliday Inn last night.

Jim Henson had a Group A Strep infection that caused pneumonia, and infected his blood, which delivered the bacteria to other organs of the body. Grp A Strep is the bacteria which causes strep throat, but it can also infect other parts of the body.

Please do not blame all the doctors blame the health care system...health care is only going to get worse in this country...it used to be the best and the brightest used to go into the Universities to teach medical students and residents... they are leaving for private practice, taking early retirement or leaving the medical field entirely....the Universities are forced to take the none pays or the Medicare/Medicaid which is mostly non pay...therefore MD's are not getting paid and leaving for private practice...going to the hospital these days can be a dangerous undertaking ....I feel sorry for those who do not have a friend or relative in medicine that can guide them through the health care system

It is true, but maybe in your case, you had a pneumonia that wasn't picked up.

Egads. A after hours peds clinic in Memphis sent one of our sons home with a diagnosis of bronchitis with only a short exam. I was ticked but left the clinic anyway only to return before we even made it home because the poor kiddo was coughing so hard that he barfed in the car. I demanded a CBC and chest X-Ray. Sure enough he had pneumonia in the right upper lobe.

I'm always curious how, in a large media center like Los Angeles, a young celebrity (albeit a minor one) can die and there is no story about it for nearly a month. If it was worth AP's time to run an obit, why was it not worth their time for three weeks?Because the celebrity (and I'm using that term loosely here) is supposed to have a publicist who puts out a press release, which the AP then picks up and yadda yadda. Looks like Nicole didn't pay her PR bill.
Plus someone at the AP has to care in the first place.

I'd like to hear how a doctor can mis-diagnose pneumonia. Honest question. What are stethoscopes and thermometers for, anyway? My son had pneumonia years ago and I don't think it was diagnosed until the third visit...I am not sure how long he had it, but it was along with other things, so it was easy to think the fever and stuff were from something else. They even had to do an X-Ray to confirm it.

OTC antibiotics are a bad idea. The practice is extremely wreckless and the whole society suffers as a result. As it stands, physicians already overprescribe antibiotics.

So, for all those in favor of tort reform, what should this case be worth? $250,000 ? $500,000 ? MILLIONS, if you ask me.
