The pineapple time bomb

It is not because Native Hawaiians should be cherished less but that equality under the law should be loved more that the Akaka Bill to create a race-based government should be opposed. The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs blithely approved the legislation Wednesday without seriously examining its constitutionality. The bill previously passed the House in 2000 as a "noncontroversial," like treating South Carolina's firing on Fort Sumter as a July Fourth celebration. The proposed legislation would ordain a Native Hawaiian Governing Entity cobbled together by Native Hawaiians meeting a threshold of Native Hawaiian blood. The Entity would negotiate with the United States and the State of Hawaii for lands, natural resources, civil and criminal jurisdiction, and other matters within the customary purview of a sovereign. It would be a race-based state within a state: a government of Native Hawaiians, by Native Hawaiians, for Native Hawaiians. It does not deserve birth.

I think either Hawaii needs to be a state, or not a state. They can't have it both ways.

Not to worry. This will end up in the SUPREME Court, and Juicestice Kennedy will report on the decision by the FabFive was arrived at by considering international law and the tribal rights of natives on the island of Instinkarana that in fact, "you can all kiss our blackrobed asses and kiss the silly constitution goodbye"......(it must be FRieday...)

"a Native Hawaiian Governing Entity cobbled together by Native Hawaiians meeting a threshold of Native Hawaiian blood."

herein lies alot of the problem , the Hawaiian Sovereignty people are not united and often at odds with one another.
No direct lineages from the former Hawaiian royalty or leadership still exist , although some may claim such.
The Hawaiian activists of today are basically a bunch of bitter ,pissed off people that fail to acknowledge that back in the old days it was their own Ali'i (chiefs) that sold out the common people, or kanaka, down the river and gave away much of the land to the new comers , or Haole, in trade for goods , cattle ,firearms , or services like handling cattle or military training . Other than Kamehameha Schools, few provisions were made back then for the common people.
The Akaka Bill addresses these issues in a very haphazard manner , and the sovereignty movement hasn't got any better ideas.

Yeah, but how much you want to bet that we wind up with casino gambling in the name of "Sovereignty".

even though probably a good 70% of the resident population of the State of Hawaii go to Vegas on casino holidays regulurly, gaming has always been defeated on the local ballots . Even off shore on vessals! Wouldn't be so bad if you ask me . Hawaii is already a Disneyland of tourists and tourism , and wouldn't those same tourists like beaches to relax on rather than Las Vegas hotel rooms and featureless deserts , when they are not gaming?

Hawaii is a state.

The Hawaiian sovereigntists DO NOT define Hawaii.

I think Sen. Inouye is against casinos coming to the islands. At least one good thing he's done for our state.

The notion that there are "Native Hawaiians" is a joke. The islands were first settled by immigrants from Polynesia. Other than being earlier immigrants, they are no more "native" than the whites (haoles) or japanese that came there later.

I heard the natives aren't too fond of white people, that if you're a tourist, to never venture far from the usual tourist spots. I also hear they have a special name for whites, I just can't remember it.

I'm quite aware of the situation, having lived in Honolulu for the past thirty years. Your Disneyland analogy is spot on; the tourists all seem to think they are in a theme park instead of a real working city.

'Haole' ....hah-oh-lay
it means 'no breathe' because the first white people the Hawaiians saw reminded them of dead people , who were the only human beings that they'd ever seen that were so pale ;^)

it brings new meaning to the movie line " I see dead people..." ;^)

Period. Most of activists I've met have NO Hawaiian blood at all.

Some "Hawaiian sovereignty" supporters I've met were white folks. It's bizarre.

BTW, the H-sovereignty nuts make up a very small part of Hawaii's population. The vast majority of us here really like being plain ol' Americans, although we wholly reject and despise that mainland abomination you call Uncle Ben's. ;-)
