FIDE announced recently that it planned to hold an eight-player tournament in October to reunify conflicting world titles, according to press reports. Kasparov was among the players who would have been invited to take part. As the #1 ranked player in the world GK would have a good chance of winning in this tourney, and thus regain the (undisputed) world championship before his retirement. ....and I'd have liked to have seen him do it.

Definitely a shocking move by Kasparov. I hope it wasn't caused by loss to Topalov yesterday.
Perhaps he'll pull a Jordan and return.
