One single tune that lingers in my mind from the musical, My Fair Lady, is "Just you wait, Henry Higgins, just you wait." And on occasion I love to make all those horrible, inarticulate sounds that dear Eliza Doolittle made while trying to recite "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain."
Bless her heart . . . with excruciating effort, she tried her hardest to enunciate words as she was directed. Her H's were silent, her language was mangled, and she could never please the arrogant professor, Henry Higgins, who made a bet he could change this street urchin.
Professor Higgins couldn't control his laughter as he obsessed at mocking Eliza's sheer stupidity. He scoffed at her ignorance and would put his hands over his ears so as not to hear another word of her horrid, cockney dialect.
She was pathetic, she was miserable, and if she weren't so pitiful, he'd throw her back into the streets where he found her. She was an embarrassment and he was disgusted with the fact that she just didn't seem to "get it."
That's pretty much the same position our President has been in with those who have made him the brunt of their jokes. Some still shake their heads and seethe with disdain at this man who doesn't seem able to enunciate his words the way we want, or say the things we think he should say, and in retrospect has been dragged through the "septic tank" of our arrogance. We all had a better idea -- he just didn't seem to "get it."
Well, the joke is on all those still trying to get up off the ground doubled over in their stench of laughter. And they are rising to their feet in sheer humiliation because the yellow color of egg is all over their faces.
George W. Bush has always "gotten it." He has had a confidence from the very beginning that would transcend any of our thoughts or "pious put-downs". He didn't care that you didn't like him, and he didn't care that you amused yourself at his expense. He only hopes you've enjoyed it, because now the joke is over.
He's left all those "Naysayers" in the dust. Pooof . . . just like that; and the rest of the world is moving on . . . thanks to George W. Bush.
In fact, the "bandwagon" is filling up; do you know what horn you'd like to play? Many, who would have never thought to play on the same team with this lowly human being, are signing up and climbing aboard.
Trumpet you say? You'd like to play the trumpet? Well, my friend, only if you know how to play "Hail to the Chief," because that's the music of the day and we don't need any more dissonant sounds from those wanting to disrupt the band.
He's been telling us that all people want to be free. He's been telling us that other nations want democracy, if given a chance. He's been calling an ace an ace and a spade a spade, but many say he didn't know what he was talking about.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. The truth is we didn't know what we were talking about. Who are we to try and tell this man, who has almost single-handedly changed the world that he needs to do anything? What's our problem?
He held his head high when many laughed at him, he stood taller when many berated him, and his patience was galvanized by his faith in God. You can see the profundity of his confidence written all over his face, and if you listen closely to his heart, you'll hear, "Just you wait, all you Naysayers, just you wait."
Oh, the joy - oh, the gladness - and oh, the day will surely come when those disbelieving doubters, who tried to change the inimitable George Bush to their way of thinking, will finally say, "The Man was Right, We were Wrong."
He's become a one-man-posse. When even those of his own party question him, the cowboy gets on his horse and rides alone. He's on a mission to get the job done.
I'm convinced that gratitude, for some people, takes time. But the Iraqis, the Afghanis, and the Lebanese people are quite grateful to a man called George, and they don't hesitate to show it.
It's many of our own Americans who cannot find it anywhere in their hearts to say, "A job well done, Mr. President." When it comes from the heart, it's quick; you recognize it immediately.
Are American hearts so seared, eyes so blind, that we refuse to even listen to the chants and cheers of those who are experiencing the sweet taste of freedom?
And for those who want to "hold out" with hope that something still might go wrong, "Just you wait, American Patriot, just you wait!"
