Man who wants cats hunt gets death threats

The La Crosse man who's asked the state to allow hunters to kill stray cats says he's been getting death threats.

Mark Smith told La Crosse police he's gotten angry phone calls and messages at work and at home.

Police reports say one call made while Smith was working at the La Crosse Fire Department suggested it should be "open season on firefighters." Another woman told Smith that if the state Legislature approved his request Smith would be hunted down and killed.

Smith has asked the Wisconsin Conservation Congress to vote on his proposal at an April eleventh meeting. That vote would be advisory. The Legislature would have to consider the proposal before cats could be hunted.

Smith has proposed that any cat not under the owner's direct control or wearing a collar should be considered fair game for hunters with small-game licenses.

>It used to be that feral cats could be shot anytime. Has it gone so far that you can't kill them anymore?

You could make millions
organizing hunts to down
all our feral cats . . .

A few years ago our neighbor decided to get a female cat. It ran the neighborhood and found a manx cat to breed with. It had numerous litters of tailless cats that overran the neighborhood. One litter was born under my front porch and another one born under my back porch. The other litters were born in the barn next door. They were not my cats...but guess who had to get rid of them? I tried to give as many away as I could the rest ended up at the shelter at my expense.

Irresponsible cat owners really tick me off. My front porch at times stinks so bad from male cat spray..it is hard to sit out there. They also use my garden as a litter box spreading their germs. Nothing grosser than getting a handful of crap by mistake when pulling weeds.

I own 3 dogs..they are kept in a fenced in yard They do not crap on the neighbors yard..nor do they breed unwanted puppies under their porches. I would like the same consideration from the cat owners of the neighborhood. I have to confess that shooting the kitties has crossed my mind more than once or twice.

"I use .22 shorts..."

Shooting a feral cat is much more humane than putting antifreeze out for them to drink. I can't believe someone would even suggest that.

Poison has to be one of the worst ways to put an animal down.
A well placed round will just turn their lights off, no pain.

In my part of the world what happens when you call animal control they might or might not show up. If they do and take the animal to the pound they put them away by shooting them. So what's the difference?
I have several cats on the property and and have no problem at all with cats, but when you are getting overrun with them you have to take measures.

Use a weedless lure and cast it close to a feral cat, They fight better then a big mouth Bass.

"but when you are getting overrun with them you have to take measures."

Understandable.

Where I live in MA the animal control officer shoots the cats he collects with a shotgun. I think he's a jerk for doing it this way, as he could bring them to a vet and have them euthanized peacefully. I'm sure the vet would give him some kind of deal, as he's the animal control officer, but no, he blows them to bits. I had a 9 week old kitten that he confiscated and blew to bits because the cat, which hadn't yet been vaccinated, had come in contact with a rabid bat (left its head on my doorstep).

Personally, I think the guy gains some pleasure killing them this way...

Oh and I forgot to mention, his brother did time in Walpole for child rape. Warped family, to say the least.

My cats never leave the house without a collar that has both rabies vaccination tag and nametag with my phone number,

My cat is an indoor cat, and she still has those credentials, just in case she slips out while I'm not looking. She also has her own e-mail address on the tag, in case I'm out of town when she flies the coop. And yes, she has gotten letters from Nigerian scammers.

Hmmm... My kitties would be jealous if they knew your kitty had her own e-mail address. My kitties love to "help" me when I'm on my computer.

Guns don't kill kittens.

The impact of the high-velocity bullet kills kittens.

Hehe.

re: "Feral cats are bad..
I could tend to agree, but recently the coyotes (sp?) seem to have taken care of that problem over here across the lake.
Used to be a real big problem but you hardly see strays in the past few years.
Well, maybe that Great Horned Owl in the neighbor's tree lends a hand, too.
Whatever, I can't beleive they're THAT bad over there, just part of the food chain..
