President Bush and Karl Rove are "working on a plan to attack Democrats in the U.S. Senate," and their number one target is Maria Cantwell of Washington, according to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
In an email message to Democrats, DSCC Chairman Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) warned that Republicans, buoyed by electoral gains in 2004, want to increase their majorities in Congress in 2006.
"With increased majorities, they know they can appoint right-wing judges at will, pass legislation to restrict a woman's right to choose, and rollback our precious environmental protections," Schumer wrote.
Republicans have already drawn up a list of "targets" -- politicians to be defeated -- and Cantwell, the U.S. Senator from Washington, tops the list, he said.
He described the effort to oust Cantwell as "revenge" for her very close election in 2000, when Cantwell defeated incumbent Republican Sen. Slade Gorton by about 2,000 votes out of more than 2 million cast.
Now, Schumer said, Republicans are planning to flood the airways with negative attack ads -- and send campaign specialists to Washington State from around the country.
"Some think this could be one of the nastiest elections that Washington State has seen in a long while," Schumer said.
Describing Cantwell as a "fighter that just won't quit," Schumer noted that she served with him on the Senate Judiciary Committee -- "and fought Bush and Ashcroft's efforts to pack the courts with right-wing judges."

That's probably true. Cantwell isn't overly popular in Washington, I don't think. I'm hoping that Jennifer Dunn or Dino Rossi one will run against her.
They're wrong - I checked my Secret Rove Decoder ring & it's Dayton.
Cantwell is safe. When the Democrats can just invent as many ballots as they need in King County, she'd have to lose by more votes than the Dems can fake.
Hopefully they're wrong. Bill Nelson, a first-term back-bencher from a red state (Florida), ought to be Target Number One. Knock Nelson off in 2006. Otherwise, he'll be around for years.
Katherine Harris for Senate, anyone???
Your secret decoder ring is wrong. Dayton isn't running for re-election in 2006.
"Republicans have already drawn up a list of "targets" -- politicians to be defeated -- and Cantwell, the U.S. Senator from Washington, tops the list, he said. "
Um, yeah. Both parties do assessments every year to decide which opposing seats are easiest to take away, thereby targeting soft money in those races.
Both parties probably spent about 200 bucks per vote in Daschle's race.
Agreed. If a complete retard like Patty Murray can get re-elected, Cantwell is OK. Combine that with the corruption in Democrat controlled King County, and she is safe. The homeless who "live" at the King County Courthouse, the felons, and the dead will ensure a Democrat's victory every time.
Is Cantwell that lesbo-pig or is that Stabenow from MI? Or are both fat, man-hating pigs?
Republican women are hot; Democat women are sows.
You mean like Florida? It can be done.
Yes! That dastardly Karl Rove is interested in electing Republicans. How devious.
(Bleepin') Schumer anyway! More democRAT propaganda which twists the meaning of words.
Since when is a judge who takes his oath to protect the Constitution seriously deemed to be "right-wing?"
Actually, her first victory was so close that the odds are very high that manufactured votes in King County were what won for her.
So, if we can cut the number of fake votes in half, perhaps she can be beaten. ('Course, I'm not sure we can. What are we gonna do, threaten to arrest dead voters?)
See? We already got him. (Actually I'd forgotten he wasn't running for re-election.)
Dayton is your typical kook-fringe, idiot, wacko, DU'er-like Democrat.
Jeffords will be fine
all those deadheads who dress like Jerry Garcia will still vote him in
I see FL and NE as best chances for pickups
hopefully Dino Rossi will run in WA and maybe just maybe the whole voting shenanigans going on over there will be enough to give him a "righteous" path to the Senate
