A 2-year-old boy found Monday afternoon with the body of his caretaker apparently survived nearly two days alone by drinking a bottle of pancake syrup and eating whatever food he could find, authorities said.

The boy was discovered after a relative of 64-year-old Gladie Mae Johnson became concerned because she hadn't heard from Johnson.

The relative told police when she knocked on the door of Johnson's home in the 5100 block of Senior, she heard knocking back from inside. When the relative found the back door unlocked, she discovered Johnson's body.

Houston Police Department Sgt. Paul Motard said it appeared Johnson died from natural causes.

Johnson was last seen alive Friday. She may have died Saturday, Motard said, indicating the child may have fended for himself for at least two days.

Investigators found an open container of pancake syrup on the floor, nearly empty. Some onions were found lying near Johnson's body, which was in the front room of the house.

Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin said Johnson was a friend of the boy's family, and had been caring for him since last year, when his mother went to prison.

I doubt that this deceased woman care taker had very much money or posessions, yet she was willing to share what she had for "just a neighbor". I am struck with how sharing some parts of our society are - and how those who often have much much more (including me), share so much less.

How incredibly sad - this young boy needs our prayers.

Poor little guy. I'll pray for him, the imprisoned mother and the elderly caretaker.
