Harry Stonecipher is a former Colerain Township resident with long-standing connections in the Cincinnati business community. Many who worked with him here have described him as a direct, no-nonsense leader who can dissect problems quickly.
A son of a Tennessee coal miner, Stonecipher started working for General Motors Corp.'s aircraft-engine unit as a lab technician in 1955.
After graduating from college in 1960, he joined GE Aircraft Engines in 1960 and was responsible for the development of the CF6-50 engine that still powers Airbus A300 and Boeing 747 airliners. He held a series of management positions in GE's commercial engine division, eventually heading it in the 1980s under then-CEO Brian Rowe.
After leaving GE in 1987 for Sundstrand Corp., where he was elected CEO in 1989, he was instrumental in getting the company back in good graces with the Pentagon after it pleaded guilty to overcharging on defense contracts.
Stonecipher returned to Cincinnati in 1991 as a director of Milacron Inc. He was on Milacron's board in 1998 when it di-vested its machine tool business, including its aerospace component operations.
In 1994, Stonecipher was named chief executive of struggling McDonnell Douglas Corp. and in 1997 engineered its sale to Boeing. He became chief operating officer at Boeing before retiring in June 2002. The retirement didn't last long.
Stonecipher would have celebrated his 50th year in the aerospace industry this summer. He had been expected to retire by his 70th birthday in May 2006.
Stonecipher will receive nearly $700,000 annually from his Boeing pension. He also has more than 1.8 million shares of Boeing stock, worth about $103 million based on current market prices.

Stonecipher was fired Monday as CEO of Boeing after an anonymous tip to the board of directors indicated he was having an affair with a female executive at Boeing.

I suspect he was possibly being to loose with the lips or something. Loose lips sink ships.

Sorry about that. I used a not quite up to date version that didn't yet have your name deleted.

Dear Penthouse,
I was a CEO of an airliner manufacturer, from a small midwestern town, and the son of a coal miner. Naive to the ways of the boardroom, you wouldn't believe what happened following the company Christmas party last year........

I worked at General Electric - Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati from 1987-93 under Brian Rowe. As a matter of fact, I worked in the Observables Group (RADAR stealth department) located in a closed area in the basement directly below Rowe. Brian Rowe (General Manager) was one of several upper management folks from Great Britain and they all had names that started with 'B'. Many of us affectionately referred to them as "The Killer B's". One of them (can't remember his name) was the project lead for the F-120 which was a fantastic engine and was propsed for the ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) AKA the F-22 Raptor. We lost the bid to Pratt & Whitney and that's why today I'm self-employed as a software consultant. You don't spend 10 years research and a billion dollars of Jack Welch's money, loose the bid and stick around long.
The lost contract and US Generals (during the heat of the first Persian War) saying on CNN things like "We can beat anything the enemy can put in the air for the next 10-15 years with our current inventory" led to large engineering staff reductions.
I guess Stonecipher was leaving as I arrived. The article was interesting until the last section - sad ending to what appears to have been a great career otherwise.
