My Mama was a registered nurse, anytime a thermometer broke, She put the mercury in a pill vial, and brought it home for Me to add to My Gilbert chemistry set supplies.
50 years later, I still have enough to use for removing lead deposits from My gun barrels. I suppose I have absorbed enough mercury and lead to drive an urban child bonkers, but, Thank God, I'm a Country Boy.
I will not describe what I did with that chemistry set, I am on enough lists, already!
You can have My mercury when You pry it outta My cold, dead hands!

You obviously don't know how dangerouns mercury is. One time my teacher told me a story about a kid that cracked open a container with mercury in it and played with it in his hands and rolled it around. By the end of the night he was dead.

Yes, but we are speaking about the fright factor of nonsense, not the weight of a truck that probably ran over your sick friend. Ahem.

Remember how it would roll up into little balls and you'd try to "capture" it with two pieces of paper?

:)

There was always some kid who would bring some from a busted thermometer to school in a film vial and we'd all play around with it. I remember the feeling of it in my palm!

Of course now I have a foot growing out of my forehead.

You're absolutely right. Hell, my dad used to break thermometers all the time when I was little just to demonstrate the properties of mercury. We are sinking into madness.

In High school and college Labs we used to "play" with mercury balls and try to pick them up and throw them at each other. In Geology, we threw big pieces of asbestos, bouncing them off of our classmates heads. I took a good many of the hits. Well, I'm 58 , and in perfect health. Haz-Mat didn't exist back then..

Teachers...especially teachers into "non-matterialistic science" lie a lot.

In fact, I had several teachers tell me with a straight face that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree, and then...

Not sure if the teacher sold you a bill of goods, but they certainly told a story.

And, yes I HAVE worked with mercury, in the class room, in labs, and in amateur gold recovery from my sluiced & panned concentrates.

By the end of the night he was dead.

What is the punch line. Was he hit by a car, struck by lightning, or given your screen name, shot by 'revenoors'.

The dentist I went to as a kid would give me some mercury to play with while I waited for my sister for be finished. Also, if I remember right, if you rubbed it on a nickle, it would make the nickle shiny.

I remember the stories about being poked by a pencil and dying of lead poisoning too.

Wall thermostats have a mercury switch inside with a fairly large blob of mercury in them. We used to play with mercury in high school as well as dry ice. We liked to freeze door knobs and wait for someone to grab it.

I'll bet that 9 out of 10 people over age 40 had played with mercury at least once as a kid. I wouldn't drink the stuff, but it sure isn't *that* risky.

Lots of Mexicans give liquid mercury to their infants. It's a common folk remedy for intestinal ailments...
