Japan Resolution Broadens Russian Island Claims

The upper house of the Japanese parliament has unanimously endorsed a resolution which sends signals that Tokyo may have expanded territorial claims against Moscow on the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Russia.

The document has the same text as the resolution that the lower house of parliament passed on Feb. 22, ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

It urges Japan and Russia to continue putting efforts into a buildup of partnership that meets their mutual interests adding that bilateral relations should be raised to a quality new level, but says at the same time the problem of the northern territories remains unsettled 60 years after World War II.

The resolution regrets the fact that the two countries never signed a peace treaty and demands that the government develop relations with Russia in all areas, including the territorial problem.

The latter appears to have a somewhat broader interpretation this time than the traditional claim for four islands of the Southern Kuril Range.

When the problem of sovereignty over the isles of Habomai, Shikotan, Kunashir, and Iturup is removed, Tokyo will consider solving the issues pertaining to “other northern territories then”, the resolution says.

Japanese officials declined to comment on what those “other northern territories” might be, saying it was a term called upon to ensure unanimous passage of the resolution and to rally support from Democratic Communists.

Unlike other factions in parliament, the Communists claim Japan’s rights to the entire Kuril range, which the country controlled between 1875 and 1945.

Manchukuo was directly west of Japan and translates: "Great Manchu State" iirc.

Sorry, that's the first one that came up via google. Undoubtedly there are better ones just behind the next link that I should have checked... ;-)

PS. In 20/20 hindsight, it's too bad Japan wasn't permitted to keep it....

I believe that was Russian territory until Japan defeated them in 1905, and now it is Chinese with some Russians still present. Large area, some natural resources, relatively low population.

Good map. Got a funny feeling. Kind of a deja vu thing, although all that was before my time.

It was under Russia's sphere of influence but only Port Arthur (Lushun) was actually regarded as Russian territory - sort of.

I have a travelogue book published in 1939 by some diplomat person who explained pretty well what he saw in the Japanese Empire at the time. There was no sign that the US was going to sucked into war with Japan. Some people have said 'War between Japan and America? Where did that come from?' Apparently it was unexpected, unimaginable.

Obviously southern Sakhalin, once a part of Japan.

Huh? Where did you get that idea? Ever hear of War Plan Orange?

Japan and the US were threatening each other and there were crises since the 1890s.

War between Japan and the US was probably more expected and imagined than any war other than France and Germany in WWI and WWII.

This is not good. The storm clouds are gathering on the horizon. The storm is still likely 10-15 years away.

Japan-Russia,(land) or Japan-China(energy drilling at sea).

Conflict is coming.....

It is funny that Russia would worry about these islands. I read yesterday that China is de facto annexing large areas of Siberia.

You know folks. I'm a Russian American and I have a good proposal for Japan. I would say this to Japanese Parliament: "Why limit yourself to just a few more islands--how about claiming the entire Russia from Baltic to Bering Sea ? Russians are really excited and yearning to become Russian Japanese. If you don't take the entire Russia, I'm going to ask United States Congress to claim Russia for United States and make Russians into Russian Americans. Russia will be joining Alaska then."

Actually there is a nice Russian/Siberian Joke.

Two Siberians talking to each other about history and one Siberian says.

"Russian Czar Alexander II was a bastard ?"
"Why ?"
"He sold Alaska to Americans but forgot to sell Siberia"

Sounds great--isn't it ? -:)
