Group to Protest Day-Labor Centers at Home Depot
The Daily Bulletin ^ | Tuesday, March 8, 2005 | Brenda Gazzar

A group that opposes illegal immigration plans to protest the Home Depot store in Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday by flooding it with people who will purchase small items to delay and discourage legitimate customers.

SaveOurState.org says it hopes to punish the world's largest home improvement specialty retailer for its support of day-labor centers and for its affiliation with Latino advocacy organizations it says are "anti-American."

"We believe in the notion of transference of pain," said Joseph Turner, a founder of the Ventura-based organization that claims to have more than 200 members. "People who are against us are not going to change their policies or behaviors unless we make it very painful for them to continue doing what they're doing."

He added the protest would be a peaceful and legal way to send a message.

A representative from Home Depot said she expects "business as usual" on Saturday.

The company is being targeted in part because it has partnered with other groups to build three day-labor centers in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles and Monrovia. A fourth is planned for Burbank.

Home Depot spokeswoman Kathryn Gallagher said the company has supported the day labor centers primarily to address public safety concerns. "The Home Depot, along with civic groups, local governments, law enforcement, and other businesses have worked together to determine solutions and, in a few of these instances, have resulted in construction of a day-labor center operated by someone other than a Home Depot," she said.

She added that sometimes hundreds of day laborers congregate in store parking lots despite the company's no solicitation policy.

Protest organizers say they chose the Rancho Cucamonga store because the group has many members in the Inland Empire.

Gallagher said she believes this would be the first protest against the company regarding this issue.

Turner points to a study that shows the majority of those at day-labor centers are illegal residents, but Gallagher contends that not all laborers are undocumented.

Home Depot abides by all laws and does not hire illegal residents, she said.

SaveOurState.org is not the same group as Ron Prince's Save Our State campaign, which was at the forefront of Prop. 187, which denied benefits to illegal residents but was essentially struck down by the courts.

Andy Ramirez, former executive director of Save Our State, said while he believes that Home Depot's support of day-labor centers aids illegal immigration, he does not agree with SaveOurState.org's tactics.

There have been a number of terms and statements on the SaveOurState.org Web site that have been incendiary and insensitive, Ramirez said.

Haven't been hanging around here too much lately, but here's an article that tickled me. We must be making a difference, because they're having a hissy fit over this idea.

Making a habit out of driving the Open Borders Nuts nuts.

Hope to see some FReepers there...at least the ones that aren't welded to their chairs.

Hi OBL! Miss ya. Love ya.

Someone may care to point out that Home Depot did NOT ALLOW THE SALVATION ARMY TO RING THEIR BELLS during the holiday season here in New England!!
They are Christians.
Due to an alledged State Supreme Court decision , NO ONE MAY SOLICIT. INCLUDING BOY SCOUTS AND GIRL SCOUTS, TOWN ATHLETIC FUNDRAISERS ETC..
So how do the "illegals" get a free ride?
See this past winter's "Target" protests for thedefinition of the 'law'..
I am too tired and too angry to look it up!

GHEESH!

I favor anything that twists Home Depot's shorts.

I got by for several months using a day labor outfit after high school. I’d rather see these protestors compete with the illegals to put them out of business than block me from doing business with Home Depot.

In the meantime the National Council of La Reza, the ASPIRA Association, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and SER-Jobs for Progress will help Home Depot attract and recruit full- and part-time workers throughout the country.

I know. That's our goal...to make Home Depot pay for formally announcing a partnership with a racist organization.

We intend to make business at that Home Depot very aggravating to conduct. Lowe's is just around the corner (from just about EVERY Home Depot) and they have no problems with Invaders in the parking lots.

Probably end up costing them a good portion of their morning sales...30 or 40 grand is what was figured from average daily store sale totals.

We're very open to suggestions for additional actions, this is a huge problem and won't be addressed without a huge uproar.

Every time I used to go to one of these stores (which I don't anymore) my movement into the parking lot was impeded by day laborers.

I wonder What would happen if the table was turned and if legal citizens expressed their civil rights to gather on the public property in front the stores which unfortunately (sic) would also impede traffic into the store?

Somehow I would suspect the citizens would be chased away , which would prove a point that these people illegally soliciting for work have more rights than legal citizens, yet perhaps not solve anything...

Another idea might be to try to use the same tactics that communities used to curb those soliciting for prostitution, and the laws targeted at the pimps, in this case who would be HD.

Talk about crazy.

You are going to protest by spending with them? Home Depot loves you.

How? The illegals live 20 in one house. They are on
food stamps and go to the hospital emergency room for every little ache and pain. The illegals receive assistance that
your US citizen does not get.

- LOL! good one...so true.

>"a really neat new radial saw"

Uhhh, when was the last time you saw a *new* "radial saw"?
That's OK, I'm sure you meant "compound miter saw", right? ;^D
