Washington, 9 March: Romanian President Traian Basescu arrived on Tuesday [8 March] afternoon (local time) in Washington in a two-day official visit at the invitation of US President George W Bush.
President Basescu is to start his visit to the USA with a meeting scheduled for Wednesday morning with the American president at the White House. Later on Wednesday the head of the Romanian state is to meet with the American Senate majority leader of the Republicans, Bill Frist, who will offer a working luncheon in honour of the Romanian President that will be attended by some senior officials of the American Senate.
During his visit to the USA, President Basescu will have separate meetings with American Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld, with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Rodrigo Rato and Chairman of the World Bank James Wolfensohn.
The Romanian president's official visit to Washington is aimed at forging the strategic partnership between Romania and the US at political, military and economic level. The agenda of talks will include issues related to the bilateral Romanian-American relationship, regional issues with emphasis on the Black Sea region and the Balkans, cooperation between Romania and the US in promoting democracy and in the fight against terrorism.
