I take it none of you read military SciFi.

Check out "Hammers Slammers" by David Drake. It's just one of a series of novels about a mercenary company run by Col. Alous Hammer.

Counter measure to the system in the novels? Fire your shoulder launched antitank weapons (Buzz bombs in the novels.) in sequence at the same aiming point. It depletes the system and each one blows up closer to the vehicle until they start impacting the vehicle.

David Drake should charge them a royalty.

THis is a variation on reactive armor. That works against HEAT type warheads, by disrupting the plasma jet. The Hammer's SLammer technique works very well against reactive armor, probably not so well against this type of system. Although it would still work, it would take lots more anti-tank missles to deplete the "shotgun" ammo store.

What happens if the other side deployes directed energy weapons and melts off the sensors/antennas that make this system work?

Measure, countermeasure. The cycle never ends, (and makes work for us Merchants-of-Death/Arsenal-of-Freedom)

I was wondering when someone would come out with a system like this. If this works in combat, it could make a thirty-something ton Future Combat Vehicle a reality. It would need something more than a shotgun, though, to knock down a main gun round.

Same basic idea as Phalanx. We also developed a laser system with the Israelis for smaller missiles. I wonder if some of the missile defense research would be applicable to shooting down main gun rounds and guided mortars.

Actually, the Russians were reading Drake first. They fielded such a system on some T-54, T-72, and T-80 tanks (Drozd and Arena defensive systems). The big difference appears to be that theirs didn't work well and precluded the use of reactive armor; this one looks like it would work otherwise.

Looks like the OTHER anti-projectile technique from the Slammers series is what we're going to use - the CIWS-type system, where a minigun (tribarrel) knocks down an incoming projectile (aircar, artillery shell, satellite).
