Michigan man shot when cat knocks gun onto floor

BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — An Upper Peninsula man cooking in his kitchen was shot after one of his cats knocked his 9mm handgun onto the floor, discharging the weapon, Michigan State Police said.

Joseph Stanton, 29, of Bates Township in Iron County, was shot in his lower torso around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the state police post in Iron River reported. He was transported to Iron County Community Hospital.

Michelle Sand, a spokeswoman at the Iron River hospital, said Stanton was treated there before being transferred to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment. But Marcie Miller, a representative of the Marquette facility, said there was no record of the hospital receiving a patient by that name.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at Stanton's home.

State police said he was cooking at his stove when the cat knocked the loaded gun off the kitchen counter behind him.

You've got to have a good response for this!

Thank goodness it wasn't an evil, black assault cat that shot him:

My cat is definitely a liberal democrat. She is lazy and sleeps all day - and expects someone to feed her and clean out her crapper. Plus, she has a lot of attitude.

Wasn't there a post a couple days ago about open season on cats in Wisconsin? Perhaps the cats are getting prepared. This just shows another reason to not have cats. As if I needed more.

LOL!
(In ancient times, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have not forgotten this.)

I keep a loaded gun around but I keep the chamber empty. Having to chamber a round is a solid safety feature especially important for you Glock types.

All of the loaded guns I keep around have a round in the chamber, or chambers as suits my DA revolvers.

As I own and also shoot Glocks, I consider myself to be a 'Glock Type' and resent the insinuation that I should keep my Glock in a 'non-firing' state as a safety feature.

Perhaps you should keep one of the tires off of your family sedan as a safety feature, can't have that old Ford rolling down the driveway and taking out the kiddies in case you forget to set the Emergency Brake.

As a responsible adult and firearm owner, I'm capable of deciding for myself whether or not to have a round chambered. In my case, if a gun is loaded, there is a round chambered. (FWIW, if the gun is not in my hand, it is in a holster with the trigger covered.)

Some liberals STILL worship their cats as gods...

Ever had this happen:

You're standing in a group of people (like coworkers). You're all bragging about your kids and telling each other stories just to annoy each other. That's fine--I like when people are proud of their children, even if the stories bore me. Well, there's always somebody there with 3 cats or 5 dogs, and starts telling you stories about THEM as if their cats/dogs are their kids. It's part of this new "have no kids, treat your dog/cat like your kid" phenomena. Same people who spend hundreds on Christmas presents for their dogs. I can't stand when somebody tells me that their cat learned something new, or how cute their dog was being the other day. THIS is the modern day Egyptian cat-worshipping.

And... most of these people also sacrifice their children on alters of men like Dr. Tiller... so the Egypt analogy REALLY fits.

Cats are evolving. They are learning to use simple tools.

I just can't imagine people tolerating any animal that will walk in a dirty litter box then jump up on a kitchen counter top where you prepare food.

My mother is like that with her dog and her soap operas. Way too much time on her hands.

I think a better analogy would be putting a fire extinguisher in a locked case, and putting the key in another room. Sure... it will keep the fire extinguisher from hurting anybody and being discharged accidentally if it fell out of the cabinet. But if you ever needed it in a hurry, would you want the flames to climb higher and higher while you fumbled for a key?

Gun access is even more important. Modern guns (good ones) do NOT fire unless you pull the trigger. Period. Especially Glocks. You could chamber a round and chuck it off a building onto concrete--it will not go off. If somebody appears in your house and runs for you, you have less than a second to save your life. Unless you've trained countless hours of racking and shooting, you will pull the trigger and it will go "click". Even if you've trained, the adrenalin rush makes you forget. A gun carried without a round chambered is almost worse than no gun at all!

Mine are of siamese ancestry, blue eyes and siamese coloring. Manx build and temperament - we like to say they share a brain (brothers).

They are both around 15 pounds and they really have that dog-cat behavior going on. Friend who don't especially care for cats, tell me that the Darrells (they share a name as well as a brain) aren't really cats.

Be prepared - manx often don't mature until 5 years or so -the Darrells are 3 and play like kittens most of their waking hours (hour?). Can't keep a throw rug straight, one dives under it and the other one jumps on top of the lump in the rug. It gets a little ugly after that.

Yours are seriously cute -
