"I did not wash my hair last night because I felt a certain amount of stiffness was probably healthy. What do you think? OK, OK, the question is whether or not to wash it for tomorrow, but we'll make that decision as we go along, I guess." --Dan Rather, Soweto South Africa, captured on a wild feed

I don't know if this is strong enough for a Freep but I decided to write him a letter

I’m not sure what kool aid your drinking but after some of your comments in your article "I'd Rather Not Say Good-Bye, Dan" I wonder if journalism is only an ambition of yours. I won't even go into the obvious misguided history of Gunga Dan, but would rather focus on an obvious failure of your thinking. It's called truth. The truth is nobody silenced Dan except for the greed of the media. If the BIG DOLLAR MEDIA would be more true to what they are suppose represent then old Gunga would have gone out on his own terms. The fact is he has always slanted his coverage towards progressivism (and you can decide for yourself what progressive means) Silenced? By who? First by people expressing their dislike for slanted coverage? This in and of itself didn't get Dan in hot water otherwise he would have had a “tire burned around his neck” 30 years ago. His employers simply saw their precious monopoly going down the tubes and we all know how greedy the big money media is! If as a journalist you look to promote positions versus reporting on them it will be generally accepted, although criticized and legitimately so by people who disagree. But if you make up facts and memos that in many, many Americans minds was a blatant attempt to destroy a sitting wartime president, then you best have an employer who isn’t out for the almighty dollar and also be ready for extreme criticism, which you seem to be saying we have no right to?

The fact that Rather's ratings have been in the tank for years indicates to me that CBS is not just in the "news" business for the money.

They have been absorbing the losses but keeping that freak on their stage.

It seems to me to be more about agenda than anything else. CBS makes a ton of cash elsewhere, but the News has been a loss leader for them. Their strategy seems to have been one of a long term nature.

Too bad they did not foresee the Internet, Bloggers, and the Pajamahedin coming.

I would agree 100% about the agenda, there is no other explanation for Rathers past and the fact that he was kept on does more than suggest an agenda, it proves it! I just think that that with all of the "new pressure" from blogs, message boards, etc. CBS was seeing dramatic decreases in viewer ship even outside the news. I know during the whole rathergate scandal I quit watching CBS entirely as did several others I know, for what its worth.Your right it was probably due more to the uncloaking of their agenda in such an obvious and amateurish way.

There seems to be a common affliction among the elite media here of which Rather is a prime example; they never know when the party is over.

But that memo (not the one in the BBC report) was about a side issue, not the key accusation, that Senior Bush got Junior out of the draft.

Sadly the bogus memo took the spotlight away from the 'key accusation', an accusation made by a Kerry fundraiser, a man with a summer home next to Kerry's Nantucket get-away, a man who had swore under oath that he had never helped Bush, a man who's Texas career was riddled with scandal, a man who held no position of power at the time young Bush got into the Texas Guard, and finally a man who's own daughter disputes his account.

That man was LBJ protoge, Ben Barnes.

His 60 Minutes lies here

The real story

You've been reading fraudulent reports -- or is it Dan doing it again?

The socialists are happy to subsidize their propaganda -- although it's the shareholders who really pay.
