As Dan Rather steps down as anchor of the CBS Evening News on Wednesday, the person who deceived him with fake memos on President Bush's National Guard service last fall remains at large, spared from even the threat of a federal or state investigation.

Both federal and state felony statutes exist that give law enforcement authorities the ability to pursue the culprit. But neither the U.S. Department of Justice nor prosecutors in Texas have taken up the cause.

A spokesman at the Justice Department told HUMAN EVENTS that federal officials

The person who tried to deceive us is stepping down. I guess that could be in the category of "remains at large." No one, absolutely no one tried to decieve Dishonest Dan.

This is one of the Google images that you find when doing a search on 'Lucy Ramirez':

a.) This gal has better things to do than to play around with losers like Bill Burkett, Mary Mopes, et al.

b.) She obviously doesn't have anywhere to stash those documents out of sight anyway.

Mr. Rather has contacted OJ to help hunt down the forger of the fake documents. Bless his heart.

Of course not. Sandy Berger was videotaped and admitted stuffing top secret docs in his underwear and all he got was a shrug.

This is attempted humor....B.O.

Maybe the "forgers" scheme really worked.

Maybe Wily Rover knew that Dan Rather and Mary Mapes were foaming at the mouth Bush haters and would jump at any thing that looked even remotely kind of suspiciously like it could be maybe real. Wily Rover knew that a damaging memo could be fabricated and distressed and artifically aged so that it looked like a 30 year old document. Wily furthermore knew a strange man that lived in the back woods near Abilene Texas who had a vocal record of hating the Bush family. Wily furthermore knew that there are smart people on FreeRepublic that had a sharp eye and were always on the job looking for fraud committed by ABC, CBS and NBC. Wily got one of his henchmen to fabricate the document. Everybody in Wily's office carried it around, read it at dinner, spilled coffee on it and crumpled it up often. The document quickly assumed an aged look. Wiley gave it to a shadowey figure (sf) in the basement. The SF got in touch with the strange man in Texas and whispered to him that maybe CBS and Dan Rather would be interested. The strange man said "shazam" and went forthwith to the Kinko's in Abilene and sent the fax to CBS...and the rest is history. Dan is gone. CBS is a laughing stock. There is turmoil within CBS.....

Wily Rover sits back and just smiles.

The real head-scratcher is why the "forger" hasn't stepped forward to start doing interviews, cocktail parties, campus speaking tours, etc.

Lefties get rich and famous defaming President Bush, not prosecuted.

Do we have any idea yet who might be the actual creator of the documents? Like the guy who's got a few drafts of in in .doc files on his PC?

That is one personson who I would really like to know who it is, and have it made public.

Bones

I'd look for operatives in the Kerry election campaign as the likely source.
