NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - Thieves rammed a vehicle through the back wall of a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles office and stole 1,700 blank driver's licenses. "This could be anything from a bunch of juveniles who want to be able to make IDs to buy beer, to major criminal activity or even terrorism," police spokesman Tim Bedwell said Tuesday. "We don't know what they took them for."
The theft occurred early Monday in a remote industrial area, authorities said. The thieves took blank licenses and laminated covers, a digital license camera, a camera computer and a license printer, DMV spokesman Kevin Malone said.
The equipment would not work without a connection to the DMV's mainframe computer, Malone said. "It would be very, very difficult to break the encryption," he said.
However, the officials said false information could be placed on blank licenses and covered with authentic laminates and holographic seals, making the fake licenses indistinguishable from the real thing.
"It's been pondered that this has national security interests," Bedwell said. "But it's easier to pass a fake ID to a teller than to use it to get on a plane and fly internationally."
And, I would hope they had surveillance cameras...
Sounds more sophisticated than delinquent kids to me too. But some kids are very techie too, could know all about the equipment needed to forge the licenses.
...Fail Driving Test
LOL!!
Everything that happens is not all bad.. There is usually a good side of anything.. Best example for more sophisticated (National Standards)licenses with magnetic strips and biometrics..
They got tired of waiting in line and figured to setup self-service driver licenseeee shop! Waytogo!
Nope, not good news, or even funny. I pray it's not terrorism.
Ohh that is the democrat get out the vote campaign for 2006

Didja see this?
Yes...I thought I already responded to it...maybe it was deleted....
Huh? The equipment wouln't work w/o a mainframe connection, but it could be used to create licenses that are indistinguishable from the real thing? Anybody make sense of this contradiction?
This is BS....years ago CA DMV workers were taking cash for making REAL licenses for illegals. They never knew how many were processed since so many workers were up to no good.
OK who thinks their bank teller has more competence than a TSA employee? I sure do.
