The vanishing Jews of the Arab world
SFGate ^ | 3-8-05 | Semha Alwaya

In discussions about refugees in the Middle East, a major piece of the narrative is routinely omitted, and my life is part of the tapestry of what's missing. I am a Jew, and I, too, am a refugee. Some of my childhood was spent in a refugee camp in Israel (yes, Israel). And I am far from being alone.

This experience is shared by hundreds of thousands of other indigenous Jewish Middle Easterners who share a similar background to my own. However, unlike the Palestinian Arabs, our narrative is largely ignored by the world because our story -- that of some 900,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries dispossessed by Arab governments -- is an inconvenience for those who seek to blame Israel for all the problems in the Middle East.

Our lives in the Israel of the 1950s were difficult. We had no money, no property; there were food shortages, few employment prospects. Israel was a new and poor country with very limited resources. It absorbed not only hundreds of thousands of us, but also an equal number of survivors of Hitler's genocide. We lived in dusty tents in "transit camps," their official name because these were to be temporary, not permanent.

Housing was eventually built for us, we became Israeli citizens, and we ceased being refugees. The refugee camps in Israel that I knew as a child were phased out, and no trace of them remains. Israel did this without receiving a single cent from the international community, relying instead on the resourcefulness of its citizens and donations from Diaspora Jewish communities. Today, many of Israel's top leaders are from families that were forced to flee Arab countries, and we make up more than half of Israel's Jewish population.

As long as we are airing this in public. There has been a problem on FR for some time. It is being used by groups that have agendas.

Objection to endless propaganda postings is cause for "trouble"...If FR is aware of these agendas and countenance such, so be it.

Daily barrages of threads concerning intolerance are totally acceptable. Any person that dares object, will have his head handed to him. Anyone that dares object is cause to go running to Admin Mod etc etc. So be it.

Like has nothing to do with it. Most I agree with 100 per cent. Endless daily threads is a bit much. There is much there to be seen if only one opens their eyes.

Tolerance has become a one way street for many people.

Don't like 'em? Don't read 'em.

Don't worry, he doesn't that's not what he's about. Since Jan 27, the day of the Auschwitz commemoration, Cynicom's been spamming assorted threads relating to antisemitism, Jews and Israel, as well as attacking certain posters. As you note, there's no content there, other than his distaste for myself and others being allowed to post on a "conservative" forum. Reading or commenting on the articles doesn't play into his agenda, it's about the topics and posters, who don't "belong" in "conservative" company.

If you cannot defend you own postings, there is no tolerance.

Before long FR forum will become an anti-semitism forum. The original intent of FR was "conservatism" not anti anything, not saddle clubs, not vanities, on and on. Breaking news is not the place for such.

As an American taxpayer, I resent this remark. We've sent more money to Israel than any other nation.

True, but not in the early years of the state. American benevolence didn't really start till the Nixon Administration. During the War of Independance and the early years of the state, Israel received some aid from Germany (reparations), France (believe it or not), and Czechoslovakia (which sold Israel weapons when no one else would). Israel dismantled the transit camps by itself.

Till Nixon in 73, it's essentially true. Ole Harry Truman, who the Dems hold out as a virtual "founder" of Israel, had no reservations about boycotting arms sales to Israel, while supplying the Arabs. As did most of the world. Aid didn't really accelerate till the late 70s, in the post Egyptian "Peace" era.

Like has nothing to do with it. Most I agree with 100 per cent.

I don't agree with 100% of every thread. I don't think anyone really can. There's more posted here than anyone could reasonably comment on, even if they spend all day at the computer writing messages. But just because you don't want to read about a topic doesn't mean that there aren't some other people that do. And if you don't like some topic, there are umpteen others going on at the same time.

Endless daily threads is a bit much. There is much there to be seen if only one opens their eyes. Tolerance has become a one way street for many people.

So what? Don't like 'em? Don't read 'em. No problem. I can't help wondering what people you're alluding to here. Hmm? I think maybe you have your eyes propped open with toothpicks looking for problems that don't exist. Around the time the Gibson passion play came out there was plenty of thoughtful discussions around here dealing with relations between Catholics and Jews. Plenty of traffic on both sides of the street. So what if lobbying groups such as the ADL like to bellyache about things. That's their job. They get paid to bellyache. They're real impact on my life, however, is neglible. If you're getting tired of reading, take a break. That's what I do. Go walk the dog, or something. Beware of information overload. It can make you paranoid. Believe me, I know.

Umm, thats a pretty harsh view of the one country that recognized Isreal and backed the old Balfour Agreement when old Europe could not. Having the US back the formation of Isreal when the "international community" was against it was all that Isreal needed. The reason for the arms embargo (and immigration embargo, if you recall) was because of international pressure on Truman.

You are talking about 2 countries that vote together somethign like 90% of the time in the UN - on the side of justice, freedom, and democracy. They usually have virtually all other countries conspiring against them.

I have never agreed with the charge that somehow America was culpable in the holocaust becuase they did not bomb the railroad tracks in central and eastern Europe. Its a relatively new idea. I think that people forget that air raids into enemy territory were costly at the time. The disasterous raid on Ploesti was a prime example of what the allies could expect. They lost alot of resources for very little gain.
