Most Illegal Mexican Aliens Open to Guest Worker Program

March 07, 2005

A study released by the Pew Hispanic Center suggests that a majority of illegal Mexicans are open to Bush's proposed guest worker program, which would grant illegal workers temporary residence for five years. The survey was conducted at Mexican consulates in the U.S. among 5,000 illegal aliens who applied for an identity card. The study's main findings show that 42 percent expect to remain in the U.S. "as long as they can," 17 percent "for the rest of my life," and 27 percent for five years or less. 71 percent answered that "they would participate in a program that would allow them to work in the United States and cross the border legally on the condition that they eventually return to Mexico." First reactions to this survey state that it "shows exactly what we've been telling the administration, that the vast majority of illegal aliens . . . have no intention of returning to their countries of origin," expressed by Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus. Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, who does not support any program that would allow illegals to work here legally for a limited amount of time, said "One thing we know for sure is that under the current state of affairs, no one would ever be forced to go home," he said. "That's a hell of a thing to build a policy on." Read the full survey and press release here.

I'm not sure that this guest worker program is a very good idea. It could encourage more illegal immigration.

Without first absolutely securing the border, a "guest worker program" would do nothing to stem the invasion from the south. The first order of business should be to seal the entire Mexico-USA border and then we can see who the hell is coming across and for what purpose. I think it will be a cold day in hell before that worthless Congress and both of those worthless political parties actually finds the gonads to do the right thing. NAFTA virtually opened the border to unchecked traffic.

It sure is comforting to know what our "ILLEGAL" aliens intentions are. Next, we can do a poll of inmates on death row regarding their stance on the death penalty and amend our laws accordingly.

Let them register.

We have a national security issue. It is IMPOSSIBLE to send them all home. Our illegals are hungry for work.

There are 3 kinds of Illegal Aliens

1) Expired Visas
2) Over the Border Illegals
3) Terrorists with anti American Interests

Who would register with the guest worker program? I would have to say, the first two.

And then we can weed out the people who want to blow your house up.

They're already here.

We can't just seal the border up, the problem is still here and it's here by the millions. We can't send them back. Can you imagine the outcry? Forced Migration?

I'm AGAINST illegal immigration, but we need to do something about the problem that's here right now.

Yep, isn't it interesting how there have been no recent polls on *U.S. citizens'* thoughts on the subject of illegal immigration?

I dunno, one of these days I'm going to turn myself in as an illegal immigrant from Tahiti and get myself shipped home. Anyone know where I can find a good supply of liquid suntan?

And leaving us vulnerable to terrorists.

Many people (including my some I know) do not seem to understand this concept. They'd rather let them all come across and welcome them and everything.

Some even think it's ok to hire illegal immigrants. In my opinion, I think that's an act of treason.

You can't not seal the border because there are millions here already. Think about the little Dutch boy who stuck his finger in the dike.

You can't drain the lowlands in Holland until you get the leaks in the dike sealed.

After you seal the leaks, then you worry about pumping out the ocean.

Or, just roll over and play dead. It'll be about as effective.

If 71% of the laborers would participate, probably 100% of employers would participate. That means that President Bush's guest worker plan would be self-enforcing.

There are significant advantages to the laborers, but even greater advantages to the employers.

The elimination of laborers having to jump the border would free up the border patrol to concentrate on drug smugglers and others jumping the border for nefarious reasons.

Not sure about Tahiti, isn't that a French Colony? How about the North shore of Australia then we don't need suntans or have to learn a new language completely from the start.

I'm not sure our leaders are thinking as logically.

You are giving them far too much credit to say they are thinking at all.
