Trial begins in case alleging discrimination by black DA

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jury selection began Monday in the civil lawsuit filed against Eddie Jordan by 44 former employees who accuse the black district attorney of firing them because they are white.

"I am not a racist, and I think that will come out in court," Jordan said befire trial began in U.S. District Judge Stanwood Duval's courtroom. Within days of taking office in 2003, Jordan had fired 56 people, 53 of them white, from support positions.

None was an attorney. Nearly all of the jobs were filled with blacks. Jordan had asked Duval to throw out the suit, contending there was no proof of "widespread discrimination" against whites. Duval refused, noting, "the percentages of Caucasian firings and African American hirings could not happen without race playing a factor." That won't influence the trial, Loyola law professor Dane Ciolino said. "He starts fresh," he said. "When the trial starts, he'll have an opportunity to tell his whole side to the jury." Race will dominate every aspect of the trial, including jury selection, Ciolino said.

What a surprise, I thought it was impossible for a black to be a racist. How many whites work for Oprah, or Jessie Jackson?

I have watched as blacks took over power and position, got rid of whites and placed blacks in their positions, and I can say for a fact that the White Good old Boys system was peanuts in comparison to the Black system. I saw it take the finest Fire Department in the world and turn it to crap.

I was there, then.

You unboubtedly remember Ossie Brown, the Bible-thumpin' DA - and the King of Crooked Louisiana Politicos, Edwin by-God W. Edwards hisself?

Louisiana is the armpit (or other bodily orifice of your choice) of the Nation.

Along that line, how many employees does the NAACP have who are not A-A?

The media has decided to draw no relation to the recent errors by the DA's office that resulted in criminals being let back onto the streets at a horrific rate.

Ossie Brown, I remember him coming to my school and speaking. He passed out T-shirts with pictures of Old Sparky on them and "Burn Em" written on it.

Good ol' Ossie. I had forgotten about him. Can't forget Senators Russel and Huey Long, and the miles and miles of Texaco drill pipe used to fence in his plantations. Ever been over by Crowley to see that?

I agree, Lousyana is a good place to be FROM. Although I did enjoy eating at the Pig Stand in Opelousas...

I remember when he ordered the EBR Sherrif to station deputies outside of theaters to stop the viewing of "The Life of Brian" because it was "sacreligious".

It WAS sacreligious, but that is beside the point. When people use their power to enforce their own ideas of morality, we are no longer a Nation of Law, we are then a Nation of Men.

I don't remember that, but nothing a politician did/does in this state would surprise me.

The Pig Stand IS excellent, as is (the name escapes me) that big seafood place in Breaux Bridge.

Lousyana - the name says it all.

That's because the average LA citizen is too busy "passing-a-good-time" to pay attention.

Those that do pay attention, leave as soon as possible. What's left just repeats the same, sad cycle.

It's always nice to encounter a fellow (former) Baton Rougean. ;)

I grew up in Sherwood Forest and attended Sherwood Forest Elementary School, Broadmoor Junior and Senior High Schools.

Remember that driftwood sign at the entrance to SF (Florida and Goodwood Blvds.)? My mother designed it.

LOL! I like that T-shirt idea.

Ossie's son, Dana, was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. He was driving with a girl on the back. The bike sped out of a parking lot, and the cops thought the bank had been robbed. A high-speed chase ensued... The girl was thrown from the bike and died, and Dana was seriously injured. He should have gone to prison, but because he was Ossie's seed he got a mere slap on the wrist.

Remember that one?

Did my basic & advanced training @ Fort Polk, Louisiana in the 70's. If there's a main drain in this country, it's right there.
