I'm finding references to the Italians being in a 'convoy' when the incident happened--more potential witnesses than just those in the car w/ Sgrena & the military involved. And I agree that examination of the car will lend some pertinent facts but that alone is not going to tell the whole story.

I'm reluctant to think that a backseat passenger (Sgrena), who was likely engaged in conversation w/ the agent who was killed, had much awareness of what was happening outside the vehicle in the moments preceding the 'attack' or a sense of how fast the car was travelling. As we know, it was nighttime...and here, the car comes into question. I've read early reports that the auto was a Mercedes (but can not find that reference)...in any case, it's not unreasonable to think that a lot of autos in the ME would have darkly tinted passenger windows (esp. a Mercedes)...nice during the day but certainly an obstruction in the dark.

"There were photos of the car on FR yesterday."

Apparently, no, there weren't. It was, as pointed another Freeper, the car she was in when she got kidnapped. He said he news service that used the picture apologized for the mistake.

It makes sense. The US troops HAVE fired upon the car, whatever the exact circumstances are - and I lean heavily on the purely accident here, caused by a car that was going too fast, maybe driven by an Italian that had no experience of the checkpoints and patrols system used by the GIs - the car should have been a mess. Ergo, the car shown is not the one actually fired upon.

first of all the driver who was killed was either an intelligent officer or Special Ops guy, I've heard both descriptions now, so anyway you cut it if anyone should have known about checkpoints in Iraq, it would be this guy

having said that the loss of a highly trained soldier is a damn shame, too bad he got killed and she didn't....I am betting it was because of her they ran the checkpoint in the first place, it was likely her wish not to talk to the US, not theirs......and I would love for that to be exposed, is there not any right leaning or objectively leaning Italian newspaper who would turn this around on this woman

quite frankly that woman wasn't worth risking the lives of 2 Italian special ops guys nor six million dollars, not when you consider the number of lives put at risk because the Italians were wusses and paid for her ransom

given her pro terrorist sentiment before she was kidnapped, I highly doubt they would have killed her unless she was kidnapped by one of the criminal gangs (the guys who don't give a shit about politics in Iraq, they just out for a fast buck)

six million dollars buys a lot of IED material....so as far as I am concerned the Italian government is complicit in aiding and abetting the insurgency, and if you asked the average Iraqi, one journalist versus the potential to kill with six million buck?????

lastly speaking of inconsistencies, I once again reiterate that the very first reports of this incident, it was alleged that this woman was picked up injured, so much for our nice captors, and that was the reason the driver was speeding, to get her to medical assistance asap or not speeding is it now?

so who was lying again- her, Reuters, what?

Considering she worked for a communist rag tells me all I want to know. She already had an agenda in her reporting. Reuters? They could report the sun comes up in the East and I would find no truth in their report.

Italy gave six million dollars to the very group that advocates and practices death to them. Brilliant.

You gotta think like an editor. How would you title it and give the appearance of objectivity? (The Pinkos actually are calling him a hero).

Can someone please define the term 'troll'?

For all others I want to add this:

"According to the division, the patrol attempted to warn the driver to stop by hand and arm signals, flashing white lights, and firing warning shots in front of the car."
http://www.washtimes.com/national/20050308-121240-1847r.htm

So according to the division it was not a checkpoint. It was a patrol.

I don't want to blame the soldiers but I think they're not well trained for a 'peace keeping' mission.

Good morning.

The fact that no pictures of the car have appeared on the Net is very strange. Pictures of the car might support either version of how things went down.

First off, you subscribe to the "global warming" nonsense.

Second....you have a leftist view of exactly WHY we are in Iraq, and the specific functions of our soldiers.

These two viewpoints alone are going to put you at odds with the vast majority of conservatives in this forum.

Spend less time spewing back to us what you read on CNN. We read it to. We just don't believe it.
