~ MILITARY SHORT SPEAK ~

           

The military seems to have a language of its own, with many terms, Acronyms, initialisms and abbreviations that aren't generally used in the "civilian world."

What is an acronym? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words. It is spoken as one word. 

What is an initialism? It is a word created from the first letter of a series of other words, but each letter is spoken separately. 

What is an abbreviation? It is a shortened version of a word. 

What is Short Speak? It is any and all of the above.

A person assigned to a base, station or ship on Permanent Change of Station orders as opposed to someone assigned temporarily.

Permissive TDY

Permissive Temporary Duty is granted for temporary duty away from the normal assigned duties but no additional pay is given.  PTAD is granted for "recruiter assistance" duty.

PERSHING 

A mobile STS inertially guided missile of a solid propellant type.  It possesses a nuclear warhead capability and is designed to support the ground forces with the attack of long range ground targets.  Designated as MGM-31A.

Personal Locator Beacon

An emergency radio locator beacon with a two-way speech facility carried by crew members, either on their person or in their survival equipment and capable of providing homing signals to assist search and rescue operations.

PETN  pentaerythritoltetranitrate

PETN is one of the strongest known high explosives. It is more sensitive to shock or friction than TNT or tetryl, and it is never used alone as a booster. It is primarily used in booster and bursting charges of small caliber ammunition, in upper charges of detonators in some land mines and shells, and as the explosive core of primacord.

Petty Officer 

A Navy and Coast Guard series of ranks vaguely equivalent to noncommissioned officers. The insignia consists of from one to three inverted chevrons with a Navy Eagle perched on top. Between the eagle and the chevrons is a graphic which indicates the specialty of that particular petty officer.
