CBS' "60 Minutes" found Tom DeLay's tormentor and his defender in Central Texas.
Tonight, the network will air its story about DeLay and Texans for a Republican Majority, the political action committee at the center of a controversy over how Republicans and their business allies spent corporate money in the pivotal 2002 legislative elections in Texas.
Correspondent Lesley Stahl interviews Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle about his investigation of the committee, and U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, defends DeLay, who is one of the most powerful Texans in the nation's capital as the U.S. House majority leader.
DeLay, who refused to be interviewed for "60 Minutes," is left to cameos as he rebuffs Stahl's questions at public events such as a news conference about children stranded by the tsunamis in Asia and Africa.
"I know CBS likes to create news. But we're here to talk about children," says DeLay, according to a transcript of the program. "You ought to be ashamed of yourself."
Last fall, a Travis County grand jury indicted three DeLay associates on charges ranging from money laundering to illegally accepting or making corporate contributions. State law generally bans corporate or union money from being used in campaigns.
Carter, a state district judge for 20 years before joining Congress in 2003, appears on DeLay's behalf.
"A good district attorney can indict a ham sandwich if he wants to, and Mr. Earle understands that," Carter says.
Carter has emerged on Capitol Hill as an outspoken supporter of DeLay and helped lead last year's attempt to change GOP rules so DeLay, or any Republican leader, could retain the leadership post if indicted.
The indictment rule was reinstated at DeLay's insistence in January after Democrats had a field day spotlighting the change.
"I highly respect Tom DeLay. I think he's a very effective leader, that he's done a lot of good things for the country," Carter told the Austin American-Statesman. He accused Democrats of engaging in activities similar to those contained in the indictments.
"This is one of these 'fair is fair' issues," he said. "There are a lot of questions about the politics of this issue."
For the national TV audience, Earle sidesteps the question of whether he is targeting DeLay and denies DeLay's assertion that he is being vindictive and partisan.
"Being called vindictive and partisan by Tom DeLay is like being called ugly by a frog," Earle says.

Great comment by Carter.
For the national TV audience, Earle sidesteps LIES ABOUT the question of whether he is targeting DeLay and denies DeLay's assertion that he is being vindictive and partisan.

But writing an OPed to the editor of the NYT saying he indicts more dumbocRATs than Republicans is not a lie.
ronnie earle is an example of the lowest piece of human scum that ever existed on this planet.
Vindictive and partisan DA earle ping.......
Good thing nobody born after the FDR administration watches this show anymore.
When is 60 minutes going to a story on John Kerry's continued refusal to sign Form 180?
There are a few libs and DUmmies who think everything on 60 minutes of LIES is 100% truth.
Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.

Don't hold your breath for that to be on 60 minutes.
the austin un-american stateswoman is a feminist, socialist noospaper.
what they forgot to mention is it was ronnie earle's office that let the criminal go by mistake that was involved in a police mishap that resulted in the death of an officer last year.
if earle were paying attention to his business, one police officer would be alive.
What??? You mean '60 Mixups' will be focusing on Republicans in a partisan manner???? Tell me it ain't so!!!

On this piece you are undoubtedly right but Delay does have one weakness going against him which has been reported lately and that is being a buddy of Abramoff and Scanlon, the two crooks who used their influence to scam various injun tribe casinos around the US. That story may take Tom Delay down.
It'll be sometime in 2009.
The Austin Un American Ultra Liberal Pravda did run that story. See this thread I posted on February 17, 2005. Notice my comment when I posted the article.
Prosecutors fail to vigorously pursue evading arrest charge that led to officer's death
You can say that #8 and again #9. </sarcasm>
exactly.
i bookmarked your post so that i have it.
somehow, the democrat media forgets things that make their democrats look bad to the public.

'60 Too Many Minutes' ought to turn the cameras on themselves!
Hmmm?? 6 o'clock on SeeBS tonight, eh?I NEVER watch SeeBS, but will make an exception tonight to see how it's spun.

Is there proof of Delay's involvement? Maybe Delay won't be easily "NEWTERED"
I didn't see the OP'ed to the NYT, but remember Rush making a remark about it, something to the effect of:
When does a district attorney find time to write an OPed to the editor of the NYT DEFENDING his actions about being vindictive and partisan?
