Green is the color of the prophet Mohammed who himself declared it his favourite color and who's cloak and turban were green. Even today only his direct successors - the Kaliphs - are allowed to wear a green turban. The Holy Banner - the most precious relic of Islam - is green with golden embroidery. Mohammed supposedly carried this very banner into the holy war which resulted in conquering Mecca. Green is also the predominating color in Paradise where it stands for flowery fields and eternal oases. Green is the color of the Arabic League and many Arabic countries have included green in their national flags as it symbolizes the unity of all arabic nations. Green is also the life-giving color of all desert peoples.
The significance of the color green in the Arabic world is even older than Mohammed. The legendary Islamic saint al-Chadir meaning the Green Man leading Nomads of the desert towards water and accompanying travelers on their way. The legend describes the journey of al Chadir through the Land of Darkness until he arrived at a bright white rock. All other travelers were thrown down from this rock but al-chadir was allowed to ascend and reach the "Source of Life". After drinking the precious water his cloak became green and he reached immortality.
Significance of the color green in Islam
Green is the symbolic color of Islam. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH, peace be upon him) wore a green turban, and green is believed to have been his favorite color. Green was also the color of the banners used on the battlefield and the color of the first Islamic flag.

The Quran and the Hadith, the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, describe Paradise as filled with green: the people of Paradise "will wear green garments of fine silk [The Noble Quran, 18:31]."
Islam also considers green significant because it is the color of nature. Therefore, green is popularly used in the flags of Muslim nations, as well as in art and architecture. Mosques are frequently decorated with green tiles.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SUMMARY OF COALITION WINTER RELIEF TO AFGHANS
KABUL, Afghanistan Over the past several months, members of the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan have been helping Afghans cope with one of the coldest winters on record by delivering humanitarian aid throughout the country. Following is a brief summary of those events:
Feb. 4
Coalition forces flew World Health Organization and United Nations officials from Kandahar on Feb. 4 in response to a whooping cough outbreak in Herat and Ghor provinces that claimed the lives of over 20 people, many of them children.
Coalition forces also provided aerial delivery of medical supplies and transported medical teams from WHO to administer the medicine to villagers.
Feb. 10
Coalition forces from Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, Uzbekistan, delivered a much-needed air drop of supplies to the village of Shinkay in Zabul Province Feb. 10.
An Ohio National Guard C-130 Hercules traveled more than 1,200 kilometers to air drop eight packages of humanitarian-assistance supplies to a Coalition civil affairs team waiting on the ground below.
The packages contained 3,000 kilograms of beans, 3,000 kilograms of rice and 400 blankets. Elders and leaders of the village of Shinkay identified the neediest families in the village and the items were passed out to those individuals.
Local Afghan National Army Soldiers, Afghan Security Forces and some of the local villagers helped the civil affairs team to recover the bags of beans and rice and the blankets and load them onto a truck for transportation and distribution.
Feb. 16
Members of the Jalalabad Provincial Reconstruction Team and the Afghan National Army traveled to the Tora Bora Mountains to provide humanitarian aid to villagers who are suffering due to heavy snowfall.
Trudging through snow that was waist-deep at many points, the PRT members delivered blankets, coats and tarps to 300 Afghan families that have been affected by deep snow and freezing temperatures.
Additionally, representatives from the United Nations World Food Program delivered 35 metric tons of wheat, cooking oil and salt to the Merkhani area.
Feb. 16, 20
Combined Forces Command Afghanistan and International Security Assistance Force joined together to fly medical personnel and supplies to Badakshan Province.
The airlift started on Thursday, February 16, when ISAF provided the first leg of airlift support aboard a Portuguese-ISAF C-130 Hercules from Kabul Afghanistan International Airport up to Feyzabad. The cargo aircraft carried two medical teams from the Afghanistan Ministry of Public Health, including doctors and more than 3000 kilograms or three tons of medical supplies.
Bad weather interrupted the airlift and the doctors and supplies remained in Feyzebad for several days.
On February 20, two Coalition helicopters continued the airlift and flew up to Badakhshan Province, near the Tajikistan border. The medical teams and supplies were dropped at two remote villages, Qala-i-Kuf and Qala-I-Shekai, in the Darwaz area.
Feb. 16
Forty Soldiers and Airmen traveled over 30 miles in a 16-vehicle convoy into the Afghan mountains to deliver humanitarian aid to two snowbound villages.
This relief mission was organized and led by the Armys Parwan Provincial Reconstruction Team and delivered enough blankets, clothes, food and medicine for 2,700 households.
The Parwan PRT provides humanitarian aid throughout the province as needed. During this winter season, that has resulted in an average of three missions per month.
Normally, the Parwan PRT offers aid and medical assistance about once a month but because of the severe weather four have been completed in the last two weeks.
The team distributed about 1,500 pounds of clothing and 1,000 pounds of school supplies and toys in support of the effort.
Feb. 16
In response to the needs of citizens of Kharwar District in Logar Province who were isolated by the heavy snowfall, Soldiers from the Gardez Provincial Reconstruction Team coordinated several humanitarian visits.
Members of the Gardez PRT delivered food and blankets to Kharwar village, which was isolated from surrounding districts for three weeks due to snow accumulations up to 30 feet deep.
On Feb. 7, the Afghan Ministry of Defense flew a team of Afghan physicians and medical supplies to Kharwar. The PRT had made several attempts to reach Kharwar by road and by air to deliver more supplies, but it was unable to reach the district due to the weather.
On Feb. 16, a team of 13 Soldiers from the PRT traveled to Kharwar via CH-47 Chinook helicopter and delivered several pallets of blankets and food supplies.
Feb. 18
In an operation called Operation Bears Paw, Coalition Soldiers used vehicles and helicopters to carry emergency supplies to the southeastern Afghanistan province of Zabul during a continual deluge of severe weather that has pounded the province since early January. The supplies were purchased with U.S. Military Commanders Emergency Relief Project funds or provided by relief organizations.
Soldiers distributed over 2,056 food packages. Each package includes 100-lb. bags of flour, rice and beans, bags of sugar and salt, and containers of oil.
The distribution of supplies required over 100 helicopter flights delivering enough food to feed 82,000 people for 10 daysapproximately one-third of Zabol Provinces population. Ninety percent of that population lives in rural villages currently inaccessible by vehicles.
Feb. 22
With the generosity of people in the United States, Coalition troops here distributed supplies to 30 Afghan families.
Beginning in November, members of the 105th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, deployed from Kansas and Oklahoma, received donations from their families and churches back home. More than 30 boxes of supplies including toiletries, clothing, food, toys, school supplies and blankets were received in the succeeding months.

NORTH KOREA RETAINS NO. 1 PERSECUTION RANKING IN WORLD
Open Doors Top 50 Countries Where Christians Suffer Most
OPEN DOORS USA
Jerry Dykstra, Media Relations Coordinator
Phone: 616-915-4117
E-mail: JerryD@odusa.org
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SANTA ANA, CA (ANS) -- For the third straight year, the isolated communist nation of North Korea remains atop the annual Open Doors International World Watch List of countries where Christians are persecuted.
Christianity is observed as one of the greatest threats to the regimes power, the 2005 World Watch List report states. Exact figures are difficult to obtain, but it is believed that tens of thousands of Christians are currently suffering in North Korean prison camps, and at least 20 Christians were shot or beaten to death in 2004 while in detention.
North Korea is the most repressive nation in the world
it certainly deserves its shameful ranking on the World Watch List, says Open Doors USA President Dr. Carl Moeller. It breaks my heart to hear some of the atrocities against our brothers and sisters there. The government will arrest not only a suspected dissident but also three generations of his family to root out the bad influence. North Korea is suspected to detain more political and religious prisoners than any other country in the world.
Yet we hear reports of how the church in North Korea continues to grow. Lets continue to lift up the needs of our fellow believers in North Korea and in all the countries on the World Watch List.
The annual list ranks countries according to the intensity of persecution Christians face for actively pursuing their faith. Five of the top 10 are Islamic-dominated countries, four have communist regimes in power, and one country, Bhutan, is dominated by Buddhism.
Saudi Arabia again held the second spot on the list, followed by Vietnam, Laos, and Iran. Other countries listed on the WWLs top 10, from No. 6 to 10, include: Maldives, Somalia, Bhutan, China and Afghanistan. Newcomers to the top 10 are Somalia and Afghanistan. Dropping out of the top 10 are Turkmenistan (No. 12) and Myanmar (No. 17). Somalia moved up four places to seventh in the rankings primarily because Christian converts from Islam are paying a high price for their new faith, especially in rural parts of this most lawless country in the world.
The desert kingdom of Saudi Arabia requires all its citizens to be Muslims. For a Saudi to convert to another religion, the consequences can be severe. The legal system is based on Islamic law (Sharia) where apostasy conversion to another religion is punishable by death. Even foreign Christian guest workers have been imprisoned and deported for quietly practicing their faith, despite government assurances that foreigners can worship privately. In 2004, Indian citizen Brian OConnor was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment and 300 lashes. He was released and deported after seven months in prison.
New to third place is Vietnam, rising one position. One of the few communist nations in the world, Vietnam considers Christians to be a hidden enemy. Authorities fear that Evangelical Christianity, suspected to be connected to the United States, is being used in a peaceful revolution against the communist system. Although the constitution provides for religious freedom, the government considerably restricts unrecognized religious activities. A new law on religion was introduced during the past year and bans any religious activity deemed to threaten national security, public order or national unity. The new ordinance is used to prohibit unregistered church services in private houses.
The situation deteriorated for Christians in the East African country of No. 16 Eritrea, where more than 400 evangelical Christians are currently in prison for their faith and subjected to harsh conditions, including being locked in metal shipping containers in severe heat.
And while Christians in Iraq ranked 21st enjoy more liberty than under the regime of Saddam Hussein, they are experiencing increased pressure from fundamentalist Islamic groups. Written threats, kidnappings, bombings and murder by Muslim extremists continued to drive tens of thousands of the minority Christian population out of the country, the World Watch List report observes.
On the positive side, Christians in Sudan, ranked No. 19, are hopeful that a new peace accord will lead to greater access to goods and services previously denied. Under the latest accord, the mainly Christian and animist south will remain autonomous for six years. Its estimated more than two million people have died in Sudan during 21 years of civil war.
No. 11-25 on the World Watch List are: Yemen, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Comoros, Uzbekistan, Eritrea, Myanmar (Burma), Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Morocco, Brunei and Nigeria (north).
Rounding out the list are Nos. 26-50: Cuba, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka, Djibouti, Mexico (Chiapas), Tunisia, Qatar, India, Nepal, Colombia (conflict areas), Indonesia, Algeria, Turkey, Mauritania, Kuwait, Belarus, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Syria, Bangladesh, Jordan, Kenya (northeast), Ethiopia and Bahrain.
The World Watch List is based on evaluation and testimonies obtained by Open Doors indigenous contacts, field workers and from members of the Persecuted Church.
