The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

WASHINGTON - Prompted by new intelligence indicating Osama bin Laden reached out to the most feared terrorist in Iraq, President Bush charged Thursday that "al-Qaida still hopes to attack us on our own soil."

"Recently, we learned that Osama bin Laden has urged the terrorist Zarqawi to form a group to conduct attacks outside Iraq, including here in the United States," Bush said at the swearing-in of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

The president vowed, "We're working every day and night to dismantle (bin Laden's) network and to bring him to justice."

Commuters Crippled on the 4, 5, and 6 Trains

(New York-WABC, March 16, 2005) — All northbound service has been restored on the number 4, 5, and 6 lines. South bound serrvice is expected to be fully restored around this evening.

An A/C power failure on the East Side stranded tens of thousands of subway riders during the morning commute.

The power failure on the Lexington Avenue line - the city's busiest - began at 7:20 a.m. when the A/C electrical power failed. At the time of the failure, supervisors directed train operators to enter the nearest station, evacuate commuters and remove the trains from service.

Service has been restored northbound:

No. 6 service between Brooklyn Bridge and 125th Street in Manhattan; No. 4 service between Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn and 125th Street in Manhattan; No. 5 service is running on the the No. 2 line between Nevins street in Brooklyn and 149th Street in the Bronx. Service on the 4 and 6 train going southbound has been restored but it's limited. The service is expected to be fully restored later on this evening. The 5 train is running on the 2 line.

Engineers believed the A/C electrical power failure started shortly after seven o'clock this morning near Grand Central Terminal, affecting the flow of energy to signals - the devices that allow subways to proceed with enough space between trains.

When crews attempted to restart the power, circuit breakers failed, leaving them to conclude there was a wider problem.

Transit officials are hoping to have service back to normal by this evenings rush hour.

report I referred to yesterday. Supposedly it was a hoax.

Military jets were scrambled over New York skies Sunday night after the pilot of a Boston-bound commuter jet reported he had heard a radio transmission that sounded like a hijacking involving planes headed to LaGuardia Airport.

The transmission -- overheard by pilots on a radio frequency used by pilots and air traffic controllers -- turned out to be a hoax, but it kept security officials hopping, federal sources said. Before the night was over, air traffic controllers on Long Island asked all pilots landing at LaGuardia to confirm that their cockpit doors were secure, fighters jets were sent to patrol in a 25-mile radius of the Manhattan, and the Coast Guard had issued an alert to boaters to look for aircraft in distress........

This Travel Warning is being issued to update information on security issues relating to elections and demonstrations, and to remind American citizens of the continuing political, economic and humanitarian crises in Zimbabwe.  This supersedes the Travel Warning of July 2, 2004.


The Department of State cautions U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Zimbabwe, a country in the midst of political and economic turmoil.  All U.S. citizens in Zimbabwe are advised to take those measures they deem appropriate to ensure their personal safety.


Zimbabwe’s economy is in a protracted state of decline, with extremely high rates of unemployment and inflation.  Food shortages continue to be an on-going problem.  Deteriorating economic conditions have led to a significant increase in crime.  Periodic fuel shortages in areas throughout Zimbabwe can hinder travel and some tourist facilities have closed on short notice as a result.


In the past, there have been incidents of violence in periods leading up to and following major elections.  Reports of violent incidents are running well below levels prior to previous elections, but the possibility of increased violence before elections, including parliamentary elections scheduled for March 2005, cannot be excluded.  Accordingly, American citizens should avoid political rallies and other events with potential political sensitivities.  Avoid commercial farms, especially those occupied by settlers or so-called "war veterans," who are typically young government supporters acting with impunity outside the law.


All Americans who travel to or reside in Zimbabwe are urged to register and obtain updated information on travel and security in Zimbabwe with the U.S. Embassy in Harare or on the State Department’s travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/.  The U.S. Embassy in Harare is located at 172 Herbert Chitepo Avenue and can be contacted by phone at (263) 4-250-593/4/5.
