BEGGING BUSH'S PARDON (Eight Pardons)
New York Post ^ | March 5, 2005 | VINCENT MORRIS and DOUGLAS MONTERO

President Bush yesterday handed out eight pardons — including one for a Queens man who went on a drunken rampage 20 years ago while he was serving in the military.

Joseph Gavin, 44, who was drummed out of the Army after the incident, broke down in tears when he learned his name had finally been cleared, his wife told The Post.

The charges against Gavin included being drunk, resisting arrest, making threats, damaging property and refusing to obey an order.

He was court-martialed and given a bad conduct discharge for the offenses in 1984.

They saved the best for last...

Bush's pardon of Gavin brings the total during his presidency to 39, far below the 77 people pardoned by his father during his four-year administration.

President Clinton granted 456 pardons and clemency requests during his eight-year term, including 176 people in his final hours as president. One pardon, for fugitive financier Marc Rich, set off a bitter controversy.

Bitter controvery... bitter? Bwahahahahaha!

Oh...but I'm sure all 456 were unfairly persecuted by the vast right-wing conspiracy. (sarcasm off)

At least under Bush we won't be hearing about the pardoning of scoundrels, I hope.

One pardon set off a controversy? Almost all of clinton's pardons were corrupt.

"It took us 14 years to go through this."

Translation: He didn't offer clinton a big enough bribe.

Since there is no expungment of a criminal record for even a person who has lived clean long after his crime(s) had been committed and punished, I think a pardon is a good way of making a provision of mercy.

No pardon for Leonard Peltier, though.

Hopefully in January 2008 then.

Clinton and Denise Rich were at a party just before Clinton left office. Bill leaned over and whispered:

"Denise, what would it take to get you to go to bed with me?"

Denise looked up at him and said, "Pardon?"

I wonder what was the average cost per pardon.
