NBC Flushed the Sacred with new Sitcom
The National Ledger ^ | March 5, 2005 | L. Brent Bozell III

It was a surprise to NBC in 1992 when "Saturday Night Live" aired pop star Sinead O'Connor ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul II and crying "Fight the real enemy!" But now NBC has aired a planned, scripted episode of a sitcom that attacks not the Pope, but Jesus Christ Himself.

The Feb. 22 episode of the painfully unfunny new sitcom "Committed" made a mockery out of the sacrament of the Eucharist. As William Donohue of the Catholic League explained about the show: "By far the most offensive scene occurs when [male characters] Nate and Bowie accidentally flush what they think is the Host down the toilet ...To say that Catholics are angry about this show would be an understatement -- the outrage is visceral and intense."

NBC has encouraged the producers of "Committed" to "push the limits of comedy," and the producers just pushed comedy off a cliff. Not just Catholics, not just Christians, but anyone who reveres God should be outraged.

I thought these people couldn't get any sicker. What are they going to do when they finally meet their maker. Say "Oh it was all a mistake".

I recall Bishop Sheen once said that the greatest offense he could think of was to blaspheme the Eucharist

They'll say, "Oh it wasn't my idea. I just went along with what the others were doing because I needed my job".

Isn't NBC one of those old fashioned television broadcast stations? They still around?

Blaspheme of the Eucharist is not doing the same of God.

That is what is a sin.

I am having a very difficult time thinking of non-violent responses to this.

And they wonder why Red State Bible-belters and other brethren of faith are sick and tired of Blue State "tolerance," and are willing to vote their convictions.

The various flavors of Law and Order aren't half bad. They even usually have a semi-conservative slant to them. But other than these shows, NBC is a snake pit.

Archbishop Sheen is correct. In the Eucharist, according to Catholic belief, the bread is transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, which is to say that it becomes Jesus as God and Man.

Like the Incarnation and the Passion this is an incredible willingness on God's part to empty Himself out and submit himself to Human sinners. The blasphemy of using God's name in vain is nothing compared to the blasphemy of abusing this act of saving humility on God's part.

Me neither, I only watch the alphabets during football season.

When my friends and co-workers talk about the latest sitcom or the latest "reality" garbage, I don't have one thing to say, unusual for me, as I have an opinion about almost everything.
