US Draws Jeers for Abortion Comments at UN

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Jeers and catcalls greeted the top U.S. delegate to a global women's conference on Friday as she stressed Washington's opposition to abortion and support for sexual abstinence and fidelity.

After withdrawing an unpopular anti-abortion amendment from a key U.N. document, the United States joined in approving the declaration that reaffirmed a 150-page platform agreed 10 years ago at a landmark U.N. women's conference in Beijing.

The final approval prompted cheers, applause and a standing ovation by some participants.

However, top U.S. delegate Ellen Sauerbrey drew boos from the audience, which included some of the 6,000 activists who came from around the world, when she commented on Washington's interpretation of the document.

"We have stated clearly and on many occasions ... that we do not recognize abortion as a method of family planning, nor do we support abortion in our reproductive health assistance," Sauerbrey said.

The loudest catcalls, unusual at the world body, came when she articulated U.S. policy on AIDS prevention for adolescents: "We emphasize the value of the ABC -- abstinence, be faithful, and correct and consistent condom use where appropriate -- approach in comprehensive strategies to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS and the promotion of abstinence as the healthiest and most responsible choice for adolescents."

"The loudest catcalls, unusual at the world body, came when she articulated U.S. policy on AIDS prevention for adolescents..."

What should we expect from the UN? What have happen to the UN officals who were using their position at the UN to support a child porn ring?

These people are sick. The US can't even speak with this garbage whole without hearing "catcalls".

You're right! I'd like to know if the reps from countries without replacement birthrates were jeering.

My thoughts precisely.

Or the French pedophiles? Imagine only 10 years maximum for what these animals pulled off?

I had a coworker who came from Iran during the fall of the Shah. She said Islam and her husband did not permit birth control, so she had 13 abortions during her life (she was in her 50s at that time). She had one son and that is all that her husband wanted because he was addicted to gambling and needed the money for that instead of more children. I have no idea if that story is true or if a woman can physically go through that many abortions without having her uterus fall out, but she was not one to make up stories.

Why is this corrupt, anti-American outfit even allowed to have office space in the U.S. of A?

All they want from us is our money. They want us to just keep our mouths shut about their heinous programs and keep sending more cash to fund more UN corruption and anti-Americanism around the world.

I will vote for almost anyone who promises to forcibly run that gang of lying, hypocritical thieves out of this country. Well, almost anyone except one of our own lying, hypocritical thieves.

Bravo! to this lady. Shame on those jeerers.

I remember the Guayana Massacre -- hundreds of babies were massacred, then, via cyanide-laced-kool-aid. Their parents died with them. In this age, the cyanide-laced-kool-aide has been replaced by "abortion", so that the "parents" might live and continue to promote deaths of innocents via cultish beliefs in a woman's superiority of "choice.

Jimmie Jones would have been proud of these pro-abortion activists.

This is just propaganda! Abortion is illegal most places in the world and US abortion clinics were very controversial many places.

Sounds too much like taking personal responsibility for one's actions - for the U.N.'s taste.

A bulldozer, for starters. Seriously though, I agree with another poster. Voters need to start questioning their Congresscritters about our involvment in the UN.

Maybe because we are too PC. I don't like it much either.

In the recent election, challenger Martin Frost ridiculed Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) for "being one of six Republicans who actually sponsored legislation to get out of the UN." I may have the number wrong, but that was the gist of it. Anyway, Frost went on to lose fairly handily--for reasons beyond his apparent admiration for the UN, but don't doubt that it was a factor.
