Lots of information pouring in:

13:04 Sgrena contradicts the US: the car wasn't speeding

13:11 americans knew we were coming -they were 700 meters away from the airport, which meant they passed already all the controls

13:19 shooting took place while italians had the italian government (Palazzo Chigi ) in the mobile phones

One of my expressions too. Just about as effective as pushing on a rope, another of my favorites.

"I have doubts about the kidnapping in the first place."What do you want to bet the whole kidnapping, and teary eyed, desperate, pleading video was all staged?.Sgrena is a communist, and against American/Italian involvement in Iraq. Why would terrorist's kidnap an ally?Sounds counter productive doesn't it?Somethins fishy here.

When she was in captivity I said leave her for the rats: I still say leave her for the rats.

---Wasn't it just a few days ago that she was shown begging for her life? And then suddenly she is rescued?---

Yep.

Probably NAVY. There is even a country-western song by that title, believe it or not (audio sample): http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:12%20Golden%20Country%20Greats:1921188651 (at bottom of page)

Yes, indeed there is. My antenna went up when I learned she wrote for Il Manifesto. Then there was the drama about her being on her cell phone with her friend. My best guess at this point is that the whole thing was staged. There was a small demonstration planned for her arrival in Italy which is now said to have grown into a large demonstration. Hmmmm

...but mostly I suspect that this was staged to happen as it did for propaganda purposes.

Nonsense. One Italian intelligence agent was killed in the incident and another wounded. I seriously doubt that they wanted US soldiers to rake the car with gunfire. We need more facts, but this was not a staged event perpetrated by the Italians or the Americans.

President Bush and his State Department, which one will it be?

They are not mutually exclusive. Bush has the final say on US foreign policy and Condi works for him. The State Department implements foreign policy, which is formulated by the foreign affairs agencies within the USG and approved by the President.

There are foreign policy considerations since Italy is part of the coalition with troops on the ground in Iraq. Bush can't just dismiss the Italian reaction by telling them to "STFU, get out of our face, that we are BUSY in Iraq, and to go urinate up a rope."

Most people don't - Communists don't care if it will help their dying cause.

Death does not bestow legitimacy. Why did they continue speeding into the checkpoint even after being warned? What exactly were they up to? What (or who) were they bringing in that would make it worth risking death to get it past the checkpoint? If they had been legit, logic says they would have stopped when warned. The fact that the woman was a communist working for communist causes doesn't help their case, either.

Prediction: she'll soon start to say how well the terrorists treated her!

I predict you are on the money, and she won't stop with that, but will go on to explain how they are freedom fighters, etc. I don't think we will have to wait long.

One possibility,
The Italians thought that acting alone would make negotiations easier by avoiding the 'occupation' element.
They used agents from italy or some other locale - briefed but not in touch with events on the ground.
Probably did brief US but at some level where oxygen masks are required and with insufficient time allowed for flow down - maybe the 'release' came too expeditiously and double-0-siete (?) tried to improvise without understanding the implications.
Things like that DO happen.

Nonetheless, this is a Christmas present for the left in europe no matter what we find in the car and no matter who and what the other passengers are - it could be Osama and no one reading the euro press would believe it.

And the communists are stupid to boot. If the terrorists indeed did kidnap this woman without her "consent", wouldn't the natural response be to condemn this act of terror against their comrade, perhaps waking up to realize who they are sympathizing with?

So they're either stupid or lying.

We know. The global alliance of transnational socialists, however, is solidly against us. Her nationality is as unimportant to her, I'm sure, as it is to us.

Something very strange about this when an Italian special agent attempts to blow by a checkpoint - especially after warning shots fired. Wonder when/if we will ever know the truth?

Kidnapping staged? Now for part 2 of this saga(my paranoia(?) is in high gear this a.m.).What are the odds that Sgrena+occupants of the vehicle refused to stop in order to attract fire from American soldiers?
