Candidates found for Primary Challenge

Organizers of the political change group Primary Challenge 2005 think this year’s budget disaster in Erie County is the sound of opportunity knocking.

Every county legislator in Erie and Niagara counties is up for re-election this year, something the group’s leaders hope to capitalize on come this election season. They hope to run a candidate against every incumbent in this year’s primary elections.

The group’s next meeting is Thursday at Veterans Park Baptist Church in Depew. All meetings are open to the public.
“The taxpayers are starting to wake up, and I’m so happy about it, because maybe things will start to change,” said Rus Thompson, a prominent member and Grand Island resident.

Thompson has announced preliminary plans to run against Legislator Chuck Swanick, R-City of Tonawanda, in this year’s Republican primary election.

At its first meeting in January, the group hosted about 100 invited guests in a discussion to reform what organizers are calling a broken political system, especially in Erie County. While fewer people attended the last meeting, Thompson said the online community has grown to more than 300 members.
