ANKARA, March 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Turkey has deployed 1,357 military personnel in northern Iraq to fight against members of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK), said Turkish National Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul on Thursday

Gonul was quoted by semi-official Anatolia News Agency as saying, "Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) have deployed 1,357 personnel in northern Iraq to fight against the PKK, gather information regarding the developments in the region and work as liaison officers under US forces in Kirkuk, Mosul and Tal Afar."

He added that such cross-border operations have been staged to pursue the terrorists in northern Iraq since 1992.

The PKK, which strives for an independent Kurdish state in southeast Turkey, launched an armed campaign against the Turkish government in 1984, and over 30,000 people, mostly Kurds, were killed in the violence.

Fighting dropped off significantly in 1999 when PKK commander Abdullah Ocalan was captured, but the PKK called off a unilateral ceasefire in 2004, threatening to wreck the fragile peace in the area.

The Turkish government refuses to negotiate with the group, listing it as a terrorist organization. Enditem

Turkey wants to kill some Kurds.

I'm wondering when they'll start killing Armenians again.

PERHAPS---with a capital "P" and capital all other letters, too---PERHAPS, this is the beginning of new joint NATO war exercises among the US, Turkey and Iraq.

Is this in addition to the 400+/- they were supposed to already have sent to fight with the terrorists against Americans?

I'm having a hard time understanding this news. Sorry to be dense. Am I supposed to believe that over 1,300 Turkish troops crossed the border into Iraq? Do they have permission from the Iraqi government? Do they have permission from U.S. forces? Do they have permission from the regional Kurdish government?

If they don't have permission from Iraq, isn't this an act of war?

Yeah - I think I'd like a little expansion on this before I comment. The same people who were screaming about U.S. violation of Iraq's sovereignty have calmly sent 1300 troops across the very same border? And nobody's saying anything? It does seem a bit odd...

If you read the accounts of the Armenian genocide, it appears that the Kurds participated.

"When the victims had travelled a few hours from their starting place, the Kurds would sweep down from their mountain homes. Rushing up to the young girls, they would lift their veils and carry the pretty ones off to the hills. They would steal such children as pleased their fancy and mercilessly rob all the rest of the throng. If the exiles had started with any money or food, their assailants would appropriate it, thus leaving them a hopeless prey to starvation. They would steal their clothing, and sometimes even leave both men and women in a state of complete nudity. All the time that they were committing these depradations the Kurds would freely massacre, and the screams of women and old men would add to the general horror. Such as escaped these attacks in the open would find new terrors awaiting them in the Moslem villages."

Read the 1st paragraph.

Yeah, that's the paragraph I'm having trouble with. It's hard to believe Turkey could deploy that many troops across the border into a neighboring country without triggering a war with that country. But that seems to be what has happened.

Forgive me as I highly doubt this.
But on the off chance there is the slightest bit of mangled truth here, I request additional information from more reliable and trustworthy sources.

Whatever Turkey is up to cannot possibly work in our interest. My guess is the diplomats are currently trying to work something out before we declare WWIII.

Well, you may be right. But I think it's dawning on some folks (maybe not the Turks) that there's a new motto dawning over the land: The times they are a changin'.

In the next few years the Turks might learn that they can't do the things they've done in the past.

what's new?
