I don't understand why they would sink it.

The problem with making it a museum ship is all the money that would take...especially for a ship this size.

I was TAD to America in the early seventies. It was not a pleasant atmosphere during my 3 months aboard. Morale was low, ship was dirty, very high AWOL count every time we pulled out for short cruises. Hopefully condidions improved, Captain Hagirtay (sp?) was CO but best I rememberthe XO was the disliked one.

Make it a museum! The market for aircraft carrier museums seems to be pretty much saturated. Last I heard there was one rusting away (perhaps the Cabot?) where the promoters weren't able to come up with the money needed. Some of the ones listed under 'efforts underway' may also be having trouble.
Current museums:
Hornet - Oakland
Intrepid - NYC
Lexington - Corpus Christi
Yorktown - Charleston, SC
Efforts underway:
Forrestal - Baltimore
Midway - San Diego
Ranger - Everett, WA
Saratoga - Rhode Island

Make it a museum! Make it a LA homeless shelter.
