When Civil Defense morphed into FEMA and started dealing with natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes it seemed they were letting their mission creep into areas that weren't nearly as significant as a nuclear war. Maybe they are trying to ease the anxiety caused by the thought of instant and with no warning total thermonuclear annihilation at any moment.

The voracity of Mr. Shaw's claim is questionable, but the theory is plausible.

I agree that jb6 raises legitimate concerns about Mr. Shaw's credibility in light of his problems with the pentagon. I am not saying we should take the bait, hook, line and sinker on this story. But given recent events in Lebanon, it gives us pause to reconsider the story.

Well if you want the definitive answer, go to the CIA as they are the master spies and should know this or are at least paid to know this.

Rumors without evidence are rumors. When the CIA decides to divulge what they know then at that time we'll know.

Lebanon is seperate from all this. Now I do believe that Syria should get the hell out of Lebanon but not all at once or at least not without a NATO or some other force moving in. Like it or not, the Syrians kept the various parties from butchering each other. True, one way they did this was to aim the more fanatical islamics at Israel. But between the Christian Latins, Shietes, Sunnies and some Kurds, that area is always ready to explode. The last time it was peaceful was when it was a 51% Christian state, before the PLO arrived.

Lebanon is seperate from all this.

Not if the Bekaa Valley was used to store WMD's moved out of Iraq with the cooperation of Syria, who has controlled Lebanon through a puppet government. It is not out of the realm of possibility that this occurred no matter how much the story has been questioned. My theory on intelligence info is that you will never get the straight scoop, especially from the CIA. They will lie to the public just to protect their intelligence gathering methods.

I think we should take this recent story with a huge grain of salt, but lets not dismiss it outright.

They are the world's worst proliferators. Naturally, they have great expertise in shell games, smuggling and other forms of obfuscation.

Probably not allowed, but, given their vast proliferation experience, I would not be surprised at all that they would have done it and gotten away with it.

By the way, just curious, but how would we tell the difference between Syrian gas and Iraqi gas? By now, if Assad ever had them, I'm sure he's painted over the Iraqi flag with a Syrian one.

Better to turn a blind eye, within limits, than go to confrontation mode all the time like during the Cold War. There are limits, unvoiced but understood.

True, he's not a felon yet, his trial hasn't comminsed. He is under FBI investigation for major corruption and was fired by DoD for it. And we all know OJ is/was innocent too.

Fee: JB, the point is that Russia could have helped move the weapons, I could care less about John Shaw.

Oh, and by the way, it seems that I'm not the only one putting up a post on this:

You're asking for more detail than I have answers for. The truth is we would likely never know for sure. The CIA would probably deny they were ever there, and stick to the official story that they got things wrong. Believe it or not, it is in their best interest to look incompetent to our enemies.

The left only want to talk about "NO WMDs" and ignore the other 22 reasons we went to Iraq.

Bingo! - This is exactly right - WMD's were only one of many reasons we needed to act in Iraq -

And because of the leadership of President GWB America and the World are safer -

Regardless that Saddam did not have an active WMD program up and running - (the World is simply safer because at least we know this now).
