Nevada Congressman Jim Gibbons is defending remarks that Democrats call a personal attack on opponents of the Iraq war.
Gibbons spoke Friday to a group of Republicans at a dinner in Elko. On the subject of celebrities protesting the war and President Bush Gibbons said, "I say we tell those liberal, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, hippie, tie-dyed liberals to go make their movies and their music, and whine somewhere else."
Gibbons' statements were reported in the Elko Daily Free Press.
In a written statement, Gibbons said he supports our troops and doesn't apologize for that, and that anti-war remarks by celebrities and other Americans hurt troop morale.
"I've served our country overseas in war ... twice. What many people don't realize is that our troops in battle, no matter how far from home they may be, still know what is going on the United States.
"They see the kinds of statements from the Michael Moores of this world just as I witnessed the antics of Jane Fonda during the Vietnam War.
"I see similar actions on the part of some members of the entertainment community today, and I cannot help but put myself in the place of our brave soldiers who are fighting the war on terrorism, while the new generation of Jane Fonda's--people like Michael Moore--deride their efforts. Today, such efforts to break our resolve in Iraq are also used to inspire the insurgents to continue their assault against the elected Iraqi government, the Iraqi people, and our soldiers.
"I support our troops, and I don't apologize for that. I have been with them in Nevada, Iraq, Afghanistan, and at Walter Reed Hospital where they are being treated for their wounds. It wasn't that long ago that Hollywood established a climate that made our returning troops feel ostracized from society. I feels quite strongly about ensuring that these brave men and women serving in Afghanistan and Iraq never come home to the same "welcome" that returning soldiers received coming home from Vietnam.
"In recent months, we've witnessed the spread of freedom in places many of us didn't think we would see it in our lifetimes. Freedom is taking hold in Afghanistan, the Ukraine, amongst the Palestinian people, in Lebanon, in Egypt and even in Saudi Arabia. This is only occurring because of the spread of freedom abroad - especially in some of our more troubling regions - will ultimately make us safer at home. That spread of freedom is in the hands of many American troops, and indeed, Nevada troops, who are voluntarily serving this great nation in uniform. When they come home, I want them to receive the hero's welcome they deserve."
A Nevada Democratic party representative says Gibbons' remarks show he is out of touch with mainstream Nevadans and that even those who oppose the war still support our troops.

How do you support troops, that support and fight the war, and oppose the war. This is an example of liberal thoughtless thought and is not logical (we will support you with weapons but..........WHAT!!!!!) Do these people ever think about what they are saying?
Two tours in Nam will do that to you - tell the anti-American sissys to "stick it where the sun doesn't shine". I love it.
