BRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Brick Township school officials might ban cell phones after a student's phone cam videotaped a teacher's outburst.
Students said the teacher began yelling when students failed to show respect to the national anthem.
The tape was posted on several independent Web sites.
It shows Stuart Mantel telling his high school class to stand and keep quiet while "The Star Spangled Banner" is played. The teacher screamed at a student who whistled and told students to stop whispering.
Mantel approached a student who remained seated during the anthem and told him to stand. When the boy told the teacher he didn't have to, the teacher

I went to a Catholic parochial school for 5 years. It looks even funnier than it reads. Especially when they are about 4 feet tall, 80 years old and tote a tempered steel yardstick. (although not quite as funny to the poor kid in the crosshairs...)
what did the kid do other than document the teacher's tantrum?
granted other kids were out of line, but really? This isn't the inner city but a predominantly white classroom of well dressed middle class kids here. the teacher clearly is out of control both of the classroom and himself.
I wouldn't be a teacher in a public school for all the proverbial tea in China.
Tell me, if you were the teacher, how would you have made the student to stand? Keep in mind that you cannot touch the student.
in no way am i excusing the students. But it is the teacher who is responsible. He sets the tone in the classroom by what he allows and disallows (Cell phones, etc.) the kids are running around loose because he allows it, and since it doesnt' seem to be out of the ordinary, he has allowed it.
the methods of the teacher is what I am pointing out. they are inappropriate.
"Watch the video. The teacher shouted but I don't think he was out of line. The kids were grinning and slumping in their chairs. The "pulling the chair from under the kid" thing wasn't caught on video. My sympathies are so with the teacher on this one."
What's wrong with a little yelling? I can't imagine, sitting slumped in my chair with the National Anthem playing, and not inviting some response from the teacher. THis is his turf, not the student's. They basically were there not to learn but to desrupt.

Please do continue to endorse this sort of behavior by students.
in a high school setting you can send troublemakers to the principal's office for discipline when they start acting up, rather than waiting until they get out of hand. In college, where I teach, that isn't an option.
i am not excusing the kids behavior, but they do it because they are allowed to. screaming isn't a form of discipline.
methinks the National Anthem is the red herering that many are using toe xcuse the teacher's behavior.
no, we just get shot at here.
OOHHH written up AND a referral..I'm sure this punk has had plenty. Do they go on his "Permanent Record"?
>>the nuns would beat the crap outta you<<<
OMG I'm reliving my school days lmao and after they beat the crap outta you, you said thank you Sister so and so and then your parents would arrive and repeat the beating, we learned respect damn quick in catholic school!
I agree. Students seem to forget that their teachers are human too. I remember in high school, my English class made the teacher burst into tears. I felt bad for her, but when she had everyone write about how they were improve I wrote a standard, "I will be good" type of paper. I wasn;t one of the kids acting up, so really did not know what to write. Also in fourth grade I remember my favrorite teacher absolutely flipped out when the class was acting up to much. He was so mad he threw something thataccidently hit one kid in thenhead. He sent everyone out of the room in order to calm down. He then apologized a whole lot to the kid who got hit. He was really broken up about doimg that.
It doesn't sound like a liberal teacher when he MAKES students stand for the National Anthem. Sounds more like a man who is sick of undiciplined, snotty kids who need to be taught a lesson.
I went to a public school...In grade school, the teachers would have pulled you out of your seat...In high school, teachers as well as the students would have 'encouraged' you to stand and shut up...
The problem now days is the parents as much as the schools...This country is sick and the doctor is on an extended vacation...
The taecher will probably be disciplined. The kid will probably grow up to be President.... of the ACLU.
you threaten to expell them from your class.
it's no big deal for a teacher to expell a student from thier class. it was done to me twice in school.
something like this: you either stand up and solemnly respect your country or I will kick you out of my class. you will fail, have to retake the class next year, and spend this period in detention every day until next school year.
if that doenst straighten them up, the flak they get from mommy and daddy over it sure the hell will.
easy.
we had some real mean old nuns teaching us. They kept us straight and honest. God bless em...especially to the very very Irish Sister Manes(ma-naise???) in the 8th grade who use to scream at us "...don't commit 1 mortal(pronounced mar-tel)sin...commit a million mar-tel sins and go ta hell gloriously!"
She was a hoot.
