Gun Control Showdown in Ga. State Senate
(Atlanta, Wednesday, March 2) -- SB 175 by pro-gun Sen. Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) has won approval by the Georgia State Senate Public Safety Committee. The victory came in a long drawn-out hearing packed with gun-grabbers and hand-wringers blaming all of society's ills on your right to keep and bear arms.
SB 175 is a good first step towards getting rid of unnecessary gun control in Georgia. And it permanently repeals the $5 tax gun buyers pay on every gun bought under the present system.
SB 175 is expected to be debated by the full Senate tomorrow Thu. Mar. 3. And the anti-gunners aren't giving up. They're scheming to derail SB 175 with more gun control amendments. They're counting on the fact the new State Senate is loaded with country-club Republicans and party-switchers who are clueless about the right to keep and bear arms.
Because this is the first gun-related action in a new State Senate packed with inexperienced legislators, it's crucial that you contact your state senator now and voice your objection to the gun control amendments. This showdown will set the tone for the rest of the 2-year term.
Here's what's going on:
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been running the state Brady check (or so-called "instant background check") since 1996. To pay for it, the state imposed a $5 tax on every gun bought under the system.
The National Instant Check System (NICS) began its first full year of operation in 1999. It's run by the FBI, and there is no special tax on gun buyers in the 28 states where it's used exclusively.
Now the GBI is losing money on the state Brady Check, and they want to turn it over to NICS and eliminate the $5 tax. Pro-gun Sen. Mullis is working with the GBI to get it done.
But in the Senate Public Safety Committee meeting last week, anti-gun agitator Sen. Gloria Butler of DeKalb County aimed to hijack SB 175 as a vehicle for her gun control amendments. She almost succeeded.
Fortunately, Ms. Butler's amendments were shot down 3-4. Here's how they voted:
Voting anti-gun: Gloria Butler (D-Stone Mountain), Steen Miles (D-Decatur), Valencia Seay (D-Riverdale).
Voting pro-gun: Joe Carter (R-Tifton), Jeff Chapman (R-Brunswick), Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga), Ross Tolleson (R-Perry)
Incredibly, Ms. Seay claimed gun owners would be happy to keep paying the tax if it were increased to $12. Fortunately, this was disputed by Chairman Brian Kemp (R-Athens).
And one wild-eyed left-winger had the nerve to get up on his soapbox and call for a ban on gun shows within 1000 yards of every school, childcare center, and playground in the state.
With people like this working overtime against your gun rights, it's vital you act immediately. Call, fax or e-mail your state senator and urge him or her to vote NO on all amendments to SB 175 so it can pass safely.

What about us? We're doin' just fine here in the Sunshine State! We've got total reciprocity with most if not all the southern states. Beyond that what they do in Georgia doesn't really affect us unless it destabilizes reciprocity or restricts it tighter than what is available in our own state.
Yeah ... But it's already been a week since I applied and I still don't have my Florida permit. And I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for reciprocity with Kalifornia.
Seriesly, you guys have done a fine job of establishing concealed carry as a vital public safety policy.
