Abortion has dominated the meeting on women's rights The US has insisted abortion should not be recognised as a human right, at a review of progress 10 years after a major conference on women's rights.

The issue has dominated the opening proceedings of the UN session organised to re-affirm the world's commitment to the Beijing declaration.

The US has submitted amendments insisting that any new declaration did not create "the right to abortion".

Is Rice leading the charge on this? This would help her pro life bona fides if so....I have been the first to criticize her for not being pro life in every thread about her presidential run. But....I am open to persuasion. So long as she shows some real movement and energy on this issue.

I fear that whatever candidate leads the GOP ticket in 2008, they won't be as pro-life as Bush, or as conservative on many issues I hold dear as a social conservative. Most likely, we're going to get a choice between social progressives on many issues.

It's going to take an outsider to come in and win some early primaries to defeat the Giulianis out there who'll be vying for the GOP nod.

Bill Owens? Who Knows?

I am worried that we'll be choosing between Giuliani, McCain, Rice, Romney, and Pataki - in which case I'll be voting for -gasp- McCain (ugh). Rice may be our woman of the hour, but as you have said, her pro-life credentials (as with other social/cultural/moral issues) are in question. If you don't know them, it's usually a sign that they're left-of-center or social libertarians.

Hell, I say let's vote for Christine Whitman. If we're gonna push a social progressive, let's push the most likely to win. I won't vote for her, but then again, I don't think I could pull the lever for Rudy, either.......

Just my opinion, that's all.

How about the right NOT to have a baby aborted if the mother doesn't want?
