"He told me these groups, these white supremist Nazi like groups, are terrifying. I did not know there were many of them in Illinois. But something about them makes me turn my head away, I guess I need to get over it and find out more about them. They do scare me."

Scare me too. . .just the thought of them. They are like 'terrorists' ; human beings, without 'soul'. . .heart. . .just 'mind' fueled by hate and ignorance. . .they are consumers of hate.

Don't want to go 'there' either. . ..

For a while Dershowitz wanted to represent him.

That's a surprise. I once browsed through a book by Dershowitz and noticed that he asserted his Jewish identity on virtually every page. When I have seen him on TV he also made a big point about anti-Jewish hate letters he had received. He didn't seem like the kind of guy who would want to represent a neo-Nazi.

A couple of things strike me as odd about this sad case.

1. In light of the fact that Hale was in jail for specifically soliciting murder on this judge (and, by logical extension, any resident family members), why wasn't the house guarded 24 x 7 by the Federal Marshall Service? This is even more important in a gun-controlled place like Chicago, were simple posession of firearms is outlawed in several municipalities - in complete violation of the 2nd amendment. If the house was guarded (which would only be logical in light of the above), how could such a thing happen unless there were complicity among those guarding the family?

2. While Hale (and his followers) are certainly logical suspects, it's jumping to conclusions to assume a) it was even a murder to begin with (could have been murder/suicide); and b) Hale & Co. are responsible. (There could have been someone else with a grudge against the judge's lawyer husband, for example).

Assuming for a moment that one of Hale's disciples broke in and barbarically slaughtered the judge's husband and elderly mother, it is a sad irony that a liberal judge (who likely opposes the 2nd amendment) might yet be able to enjoy her husband and mother's company if her spouse had been armed and able to resist the killer who entered their home.

Oh no doubt. But Dershowitz hated Hale and everything he stood for. He was concerned about the precedent being set of personal beliefs becoming a litmus test for admittance to the Bar.

I've been wondering why everyone has already determined that this Hale character is involved. Now, it sure looks like it, but come on-- like you said, her husband was a criminal defense attorney (in CHICAGO). Surely he was dealing with very unsavory characters too. Then there is always simply a random act of violence that has nothing to do with their careers.

I feel horrible for this women. I knew a DA once whose entire family was under a death threat for a few years from gang members. He had 3 kids under 5 (everyone's okay, but imagine the worrying).

Oh my, does anyone know anything about her. She is 61 so I hope we can rule out a love triangle.

Unless horn-dog Bill is involved. :O)

If memory serves me right (I live in DuPage County, due west from Chicago) Matthew Hale studied to be a lawyer, passed the bar exam, but the legal structure wouldn't let him become one because of his racist, white supremicist views and his World Church. Rejected him on basis of moral turpitude, or some such thing. Didn't meet the standards to become a lawyer (like Bill Clinton, but somehow he slipped through, but I digress). Hale also played violin, and is a very very clever, bright (and therefore much more dangerous) man. I am totally convinced that this was murder by proxy. Hale had her mom and husband bumped off by one of his white supremicist followers. Question is, will the police be able to tie the pieces together and catch the perp. And then tie that perp to Matthew Hale. The cops have their work cut out for them. Meanwhile, my heart goes out to that poor woman. What a horrifying scene to come home to. I truly hope the investigators figure this one out sooner than later (no 30 years to solve it, like the BTK killer, I hope).

That's my thinking too.

If the police only go on that basis, they may end up missing important clues that point elsewhere.

Tragic to be sure, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions and just blame the obvious nut cases. It could be random violence or a break in gone bad.

"It says she's a graduate of Wheaton College. "

There are 2 Wheaton Colleges: One in Illinois, and one in Massachussetts.

"If the house was guarded (which would only be logical in light of the above), how could such a thing happen unless there were complicity among those guarding the family? "

Many ways. . .'Guardsare human. . .and they have been known, to let their guard down.or just an early lunch. . .they stepped inside. . .etc. et al. . .

OR; more likely, ...the person entered without raising suspicions. . .doubt that the person/s who did this. ..came running toward the house with a weapon in view. . .more likely. ..more clever/subtle.

That said; it is an assumption to imagine Guards. . .may have had 'security' and cameras etc; but not 'armed guards'. . albeit. . Guards seem more reasonable here. . .and we do not know if her husband had a gun and/or if he did; whether he had a chance to use it. ..or not.

We have to wait for many of the details before we can wrap up our assumptions here. . .

OTOH. ..Free Repub is a place to speculate and consider options/possibilities. . .

"enhanced sentence"

If this idiot was connected to these murders - he's looking at more than an "enhanced sentence" .. he's looking at the gas chamber.

I think you're on the right track. I would presume his lawyers would petition the court to have her removed from the case, due to prejudicial issues.

However, the court could waive giving a ruling (set for April 6) - to see if there is some resolution regarding the murders. With today's crime fighting aparatus available - it might not take that much time to find the perps.

Actually the first institution to call itself "Wheaton College" is the one in Illinois (founded in 1860 by Jonathan Blanchard). In 1837, there was a Wheaton Seminary for women founded in Norton, MA, which changed its name to "Wheaton College" in 1897.
