I actually think 'Vera Drake' should have been nominated! It was certainly better then stuff like 'Finding Neverland' and the ridiculously overrated 'Million Dollar Baby'.

Did you see the film? Because if you did you would know that she was not "incapable." Her suicide attempts were stopped and she was heavily sedated to prevent any further effort.
So not so clear cut...
And my question still stands -- is suicide the same thing as abortion?

While I think the entire dust-up over the theme of this movie is nonsense, it can't be denied that if the story around these same characters were being told in the 40s or 50s, Maggie would have triumphed over her situation and used the same determination that drove her to be a champion, to overcome her physical challenge.
That is the difference in movies made before and after the 60s.

How many more Terri's will be ever more vulnerable with MDB winning the Best Picture at the Oscars?See this is why if you have not seen the movie you really are at a loss in discussing it.
Swank's character was not in the position of Terri, morally, ethically, or religiously.

Ironically one of the pictures nominated for several awards, including Best Picture, I found much more disturbing.
Why is no one discussing the promotion of drunk driving in Sideways? Now that is not a victimless crime.
Hypocrisy?

"I read all the reviews and heard from shocked viewers of this Million Dollar Mercy-Killing film. I don't need to patronize it, nor did I need to Patronize Michael Moore."
Calm down, no one is going to make you see this movie. You've chosen to form an opinion based on film reviews and shocked viewers, totally negating the opinion of most of those who HAVE seen the movie. If you're happy locked up in a little world where your opinions are fed to you by others, fine. I still contend that the movie does not glorify killing or euthanasia, and I have seen the movie. I think anyone who's fed you a line about glorifying euthanasia is full of crap.

"Why is no one discussing the promotion of drunk driving in Sideways? Now that is not a victimless crime. "
Haven't seen the movie, but I have to say, drunk driving is a victimless crime until the drunk driver hits someone or causes an accident. At that point (depending upon what happened) criminal intent should be assumed.

Being sedated even makes it worse since she does not any longer have the right to make a decision. It is murder if it goes to any court. Yes, Abortion and Assisted Suicide or Suicide are the same immoral act. Who cares how you package it?? Why do you think there is a difference??

You gotta wonder what Christopher Reeves would think of this film's "success" . . .

You are breaking the Forum's rules about personal attacks and use of poorly-hidden obscenities. Do you read the rules? This comment has nothing to do with the movie.

Sideways got seen by so few people, that it didn't rise to the level a discussion.
It was a more boring version of the Accidental Tourist (if that is possible).

The reviewers and other shocked friends also shared the displeasure of "VIEWING" the death themed show as well.
It's better to learn from others mistakes instead of having to make all your own.

Nevertheless, you are breaking Forum rules. Does that not count for you as you"call them like you see them?"
