Something rotten in air -- but what?
February 28, 2005
BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Staff Reporter
The City of Big Odors lived up to its name Sunday as Chicagoans woke up, opened their doors and smelled something rotten.
An invisible cloud of ... well, who-knows-what wafted across the city starting about 2 a.m. Sunday.
Was it from the fire at BP Amoco's Whiting, Ind., plant Saturday afternoon? BP officials say that was not the cause of the smell.
Winds of 10 to 15 mph out of the southeast gradually blew the stench through Chicago, up to northwest suburbs such as Park Ridge, Schaumburg and Crystal Lake, said NICOR spokesman Tom Kallay.
Gas companies got calls from those areas complaining of what might have been a natural gas smell. They confirmed there was no gas or other harmful substance in the air.

A few talking points,
- If it was this bad, how is it so hard to find the origin?
- In a post 911 world how can such a "release" not be identified?
- The Chicago metro area includes over 7 million people. Were they all "mistaken"?
- Being a Sunday, is this the kind of response we can expect from government and corporate entities?
- It sure is interesting to see how quick everbody is to say there it was not their "problem" but nobody can say what -is- going on.
- Will there ever be any follow up to this story or do we all just say, Ooops?
- Can anybody in the affected area comment on what they actually experienced and perceived what was going on?
Wasn't me. I moved away 5 years ago.
Reminds me of an old joke.
A couple is making out on the lakefront in Chicago, and as the girl got into she started moaning, " oh baby kiss me where it stinks". So he drove her to Gary Indiana....
Hmmmm.
Too early for White Sox spring training....
I wonder if it'a a Lake Thing...
I remember actually driving through Gary when I was a young lad and Gary actually had a thriving industrial base.
The smell was so bad, it could knock a vulture off a manure wagon. :-O
If it was Boston i would have said Ted Kennedy was back in town but since it is Chicago i am perplexed
Is Michael Moore in the area?
Yes, but your slip stream still lingers.:)
Pull my finger?
Apparently the DNR guys get off after about 9pm and thats when the industries start dumping in the river over on the East side.
Maybe it's the effluvium of decades of political corruption at City Hall.
It's the sordid collection of crapweasel Democrats who control Chicago.
sorry...
** scuze me **
Could be a terrorist dry run. Chicago better build a fence around the border with the lake.
Looks like inadvertantly started another infamous Freep joke thread.
Like everybody yukking up the shooting in Texas........
The mystery smell is no mystery.
It's called Gary Indiana!
All good points. The general rule is, the more terrible the reason, the less you'll hear about it afterwards.
Night of the Living Dems.
