U.S. employees more dissatisfied with jobs

NEW YORK - U.S. workers, pushed to produce more and uneasy about new technology and other changes, are markedly less satisfied with their jobs than a decade ago, a new survey says.

But the decline in on-the-job happiness, which continued through economic cycles in recent years, has at least temporarily leveled off, according to the survey released Monday by The Conference Board, a New York-based business research group.

Half of U.S. workers are happy with their jobs, down from nearly 59 percent in 1995, according to the survey. Of those, just 14 percent say they are very satisfied.

I used to enjoy doing my job too. But then again I've been doing it for 25 years so maybe I'm just bored.

Aw swell!  We finally agree that there are more jobs than ever with higher pay than ever.   It doesn't matter because we're still not satisfied!  There was a pop song in the early '70's called "Take this Job and Shove it!".  A few years later with Carter's double digit unemployment another song came out "I wish I had a Job to Shove!".

I guess msnbc wants to bring back the high job satisfaction we had during the Carter years.

Exactly.

"Compared to a decade ago, job satisfaction has declined among all types of workers, but the drop varies by age and income. The biggest decline in on-the-job happiness was among workers earning $25,000 to $35,000 and among workers between the ages of 35 to 44."

"The workers most satisfied with their jobs are those at least 65 years old, the survey found."

35 - 44 = DOB '61 - '70.
"educated" (high school) '76 - '85
college = '80 - '89
enter work force '84 - '93

So the dissatisfied entered the work world during the transition from GHWB and x42.

The happy campers are the boomers.

New DNC talking point here:

Despite job increases under President Bush, workers aren't happy with their job, as opposed to a decade ago when BILL CLINTON was in office.

So, not only is President Bush to blame for lower-paying jobs, jobs without healthcare, but now we can add "unhappy" jobs to the list.

Why don't we just tax the "rich" up to 90% of their income and all go on welfare like they do in Europe. /sarc

Anyone who likes work is sick. I'm glad to see that the mental illness of the past is clearing up.

I have used this line consistently for plenty of laughs.

Invariably, someone will start talking about how wonderful and rewarding their job is, and how much they love it.

Ask them nicely for particularly what is fulfilling and rewarding about their job?

Very often, you will be returned a classic 'deer caught in the headlights' look.

If they can collect themselves they will often tell you that they 'enjoy working with people,' but I alwasy remind them most jobs are not for hermits and the majority of jobs has people working with people.

By now the person would have moved along.

I have been a manager most of my adult life, I'm 51. I find that too many younger folks seeking a job, don't really want it. If you don't want a job, it's hard to be happy with it. If I was truly unhappy, I'd do something else.

My kids and younger relatives laugh when I say things like "working for the man...". They haven't a clue.

My job is not fun anymore. I have to read a tech journal a day to keep up with the "young guns" and what is changing.

Complaining is normal. Being miserable is insane.

If you don't like your job it can affect your whole life. Sometimes it is more important to take a job you like than one where you are just doing it for the pay. I have seen some pretty miserable people who fall into this category. Life's a b$^h and than you die.
