A retired city police officer was found dead in his Long Island home on Sunday, apparently slashed to death by a samurai sword, authorities said.

The former policeman, Scott Nager, 51, was found dead by his wife, Laura at about 1 p.m., said Officer Al Prim, a spokesman for the Suffolk County police.

Nager served on the city police force for 15 years, working as a patrolman in the 34th precinct, which includes Washington Heights and Inwood. He retired in July, 1996 because of a service-related injury, The New York Times reported.

Suffolk county police said Laura Nager's son, Zachary Gibian, 18, was arrested in connection with the death. He was charged with second degree murder and set to be arraigned on Monday in First District Court in Central Islip.

Oh the senselessness of it all. When will Congress ban all of these assault swords? They need to close the loophole at sword shows. Who really needs a sword anyway? Of course, the Congress should still allow swords for hunting...

This weekend I had the opportunity to hold three different authentic Samurai swords that were recently inherited by a lifelong friend of mine. One of them was over 400 years old, the other two were just over 300 years old.

Once you hold a real one in your hand you get a whole different sense of what a formidable weapon these things are.

My friend had me hold a piece of rice paper that was about 4 inches wide between my fingers. This made me more than a little nervous. He took one of the swords and easily cut the paper in two. The sharpness of the blade combined with its weight and heft make it easy to see how you could take off a head or a hand with a single stroke.

Guns and SUVs apparently aren't the only things to up and kill people on their own.

Seems I read a few months ago about a New York street gang whose "trademark" was to use swords to dispatch rival gang members.

The ways real swords were made back then are fascinating too. Many were smelted from iron-rich sands into high-carbon steel, then the blades were built up slowly from multiple slabs of different steels, with the hard edge steel surrounded by soft, tough side and back steels. Then came the differential heat treating that leaves the visible hamon and an even harder edge, followed by long, patient shaping on water stones. Meanwhile, other craftsmen fashioned the handles, fittings, sheaths etc. By the time a sword was finished or a set of swords, they cost their buyer a whole lot of money at the time. Those old swords cost so much today that I'll never be able to own one. I am thinking about a modern-made example though that is made almost the same way.

When you ban swords, only the criminals will have the swords.

There are modern swords made the old way. Really good ones go for more than $10,000. Nothing under $1000 is worth looking at. Try http://www.bugei.com and http://www.swordforum.com for a start.

The US Army rounded up hundreds, if not thousands of swords during the Occupation of Japan. When my dad got there in 1949 he was able to buy a matched pair (long sword and short sword with a throwing knife in the scabbard) from a private owner.
Many of these swords were taken out to sea and dumped.

Get a gun and steal an original Samurai sword from someone that doesn't have a gun.
