PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady attended St. John's Chruch in Washington this morning. The nation's governors are in Washington this week for their winter National Governors' Association meeting, and the President and First Lady are hosting a formal dinner tonight in the White House for them. I waited as long as poosible hoping some photos of the dinner would appear on Yahoo. But it's after 5:30pm Pacific, and none have appeared yet. So thise Dose is going up without them.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger waved the green flag to start the NASCAR Nextel Cup race in Fontana, but left shortly afterwards. No word on whether or not he was to fly immediately to Washington for the dinner. Look for various cabinet secretaries to speak at various sessions of the governors' meeting during the week. Although there is no word as to their schedules, the President and Vice President often attend at least one Governors' Association session.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the President's Address to the Slovak people, 2/24/05
I'm proud to stand in this great square, which has seen momentous events in the history of Slovakia and the history of freedom. Almost 17 years ago, thousands of Slovaks gathered peacefully in front of this theater. They came, not to welcome a visiting President, but to light candles, to sing hymns, to pray for an end to tyranny and the restoration of religious liberty.
From the hotel to our left, communist authorities watched thousands of candles shining in the darkness -- and gave the order to extinguish them. The authorities succeeded in crushing that protest. But with their candles and prayers, the people of Bratislava lit a fire for freedom that day, a fire that quickly spread across the land. And within 20 months, the regime that drove Slovaks from this square would itself be driven from power. By claiming your own freedom, you inspired a revolution that liberated your nation and helped to transform a continent.
Slovaks know the horror or tyranny, so you're working to bring the hope of freedom to people who have not known it. You've sent peacekeepers to Kosovo, and election observers to Kiev. You've brought Iraqis to Bratislava to see firsthand how a nation moves from dictatorship to democracy. Your example is inspiring newly-liberated people. You're showing that a small nation, built on a big idea, can spread liberty throughout the world.
At this moment, Slovak soldiers are serving courageously alongside U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some have given their lives in freedom's cause. We honor their memory. We lift them up in our prayers. Words can only go so far in capturing the grief of their families and their countrymen. But by their sacrifice, they have helped purchase a future of freedom for millions. Many of you can still recall the exhilaration of voting for the first time after decades of tyranny. And as you watched jubilant Iraqis dancing in the streets last month, holding up ink-stained fingers, you remembered Velvet Days. For the Iraqi people, this is their 1989, and they will always remember who stood with them in their quest for freedom.
I will not be around for long any luck on finding out where that photo you posted yesterday came from?
I think David Asman has done a little of the UN reporting, too, but Johathan Hunt has been the bulldog that dug everything out and exposed them.
He should get a Pulitzer Prize for that work. Any guesses about how likely that is?
I agree .. I'd rather watch reruns of Golden Girls than watch the screaming shows.
I am fine and reading your posts all the time. I am working long hours and so just have time to take a quick look at these pictures late in the evening. It is 9pm here.
You can do a right-click on the photo itself, then look at Properties and tell what site the photo came from. If you copy and paste that url into your window at the top, it will take you to the site that it came from.
However, the photo was just sitting there on that site with a bunch of photos of various people and no explanation. I don't think the photo was originally at that site, they got it somewhere else.
I think I have seen it somewhere else with an explanation but for the life of me I cannot remember where I have tried the main sources of photos that I know of but cannot find it.
I HATE those stupid alerts. Especially when it's something they've been reporting on for the last hour and then they bring up that stupid Fox Alert thingy. "Remember that thing we've been talking about all day? Yeah, we're still talking about it..." It's SO annoying.
I agree .. and when FOX has people like Bob Beckel (who paid a whore to service him in his own home while his wife was away) .. I seriously question their credibility. Also .. Robert Frost (TX) - the idiot who sent his aide to Tom DeLay's office to steal a copy of the redistricting plan - and the guy was seen on video .. and FOX uses him as some credible source. Neither of those guys could ever tell me anything I would believe.
Today - Bob Beckel was on with Rich Galen. Rich is a peach of a guy - and a great conservative. After Rich got through talking about SocSec, what does Bob say - he laughs and says what a spin job that was. I just want to stand up and throw something at his lying face. His sole retort was ridicule - nothing to counter what Rich actually said.
Decided it was better to just change channels.
Yeah .. that was so stupid and transparent.
Got to agree about the Fox Alert. I used to go into high alert and pay attention when I heard that. Now I just ignore it. In fact, I look at FR's Breaking News section to get the REAL breaking news.
If their alert isn't yesterday's news, it's something completely trivial -- 'Michael Jackson has just left the hospital after being hospitalized for the flu.'
Swann is THE pro-life candidate in the GOP primary, and he also hunts!
He is the man!!!
Hey Numa Numa. Saw you were on that thread the other day.
Now that is a riot.
I can top that. My neighbor across the pond, the city councilman, did that in his driveway at 3 am with his wife AT HOME. Then when the prostitute tried to steal his wallet, he CALLED THE COPS! Real genius, that guy.
And then when there are really big news events (i.e. the Pope's most recent hospital visit), it's "breaking news" ALL DAY! It can't be breaking news for that long. It should be breaking news for maybe the first half hour or so, after that it's not breaking anymore.
Well .. The Jackson trial begins tomorrow with opening statements. It will be nothing but that trial all day.
I also heard that the mystery witness will be interviewed - and then opening statements.
But .. Rush will be back from Afghanistan and I expect the whole week will be most awesome to listen to.
I forgot to mention -- the genius City Councilman is a Democrat. Of course.
What kind of response did he get with the Bush-bashing ..??
Well .. Bob was very wrong about some parts of the war .. but he made a lot of points with me when he stood up there and said "I was wrong".
A couple of pictures to finish with a baby one for Wolfstar and a Cheney one for my indulgence.
Good night all
