A day in the life of President Bush (2/27/05)
WhiteHouse.gov; Yahoo News Photos ^ | 2/27/05

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady attended St. John's Chruch in Washington this morning. The nation's governors are in Washington this week for their winter National Governors' Association meeting, and the President and First Lady are hosting a formal dinner tonight in the White House for them. I waited as long as poosible hoping some photos of the dinner would appear on Yahoo. But it's after 5:30pm Pacific, and none have appeared yet. So thise Dose is going up without them.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger waved the green flag to start the NASCAR Nextel Cup race in Fontana, but left shortly afterwards. No word on whether or not he was to fly immediately to Washington for the dinner. Look for various cabinet secretaries to speak at various sessions of the governors' meeting during the week. Although there is no word as to their schedules, the President and Vice President often attend at least one Governors' Association session.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the President's Address to the Slovak people, 2/24/05

I'm proud to stand in this great square, which has seen momentous events in the history of Slovakia and the history of freedom. Almost 17 years ago, thousands of Slovaks gathered peacefully in front of this theater. They came, not to welcome a visiting President, but to light candles, to sing hymns, to pray for an end to tyranny and the restoration of religious liberty.

From the hotel to our left, communist authorities watched thousands of candles shining in the darkness -- and gave the order to extinguish them. The authorities succeeded in crushing that protest. But with their candles and prayers, the people of Bratislava lit a fire for freedom that day, a fire that quickly spread across the land. And within 20 months, the regime that drove Slovaks from this square would itself be driven from power. By claiming your own freedom, you inspired a revolution that liberated your nation and helped to transform a continent.

Slovaks know the horror or tyranny, so you're working to bring the hope of freedom to people who have not known it. You've sent peacekeepers to Kosovo, and election observers to Kiev. You've brought Iraqis to Bratislava to see firsthand how a nation moves from dictatorship to democracy. Your example is inspiring newly-liberated people. You're showing that a small nation, built on a big idea, can spread liberty throughout the world.

At this moment, Slovak soldiers are serving courageously alongside U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some have given their lives in freedom's cause. We honor their memory. We lift them up in our prayers. Words can only go so far in capturing the grief of their families and their countrymen. But by their sacrifice, they have helped purchase a future of freedom for millions. Many of you can still recall the exhilaration of voting for the first time after decades of tyranny. And as you watched jubilant Iraqis dancing in the streets last month, holding up ink-stained fingers, you remembered Velvet Days. For the Iraqi people, this is their 1989, and they will always remember who stood with them in their quest for freedom.

I laughed myself silly when Hunt said that. He's a breath of fresh air and Bevelaqua is one of their best terrorism analysts IMO.

Did you guys here this morning, I haven't seen it on FR yet, but Russia signed a deal with Iran this morning where they will give Iran nuclear material. President Bush is reportedly not happy. I thought they were giving Iran the stuff already, but I will have to research and see exactly what the deal was about. Putin is doing his own thing and putting on a face with Bush.

Talking of bashing remember when the VP went to Poland for the Aushwitz Anniversary and he was criticized for his clothing. There was a lot of speculation as to whether the jacket was his or had he worn it as a last minute change of plan because the cold was worse than thought or he did not have anything suitable etc.

I always maintained it was his jacket as it seemed the sort of thing he would wear to keep the cold out and also having a heart condition I would alway assume he would have suitable outdoor clothing as he is an outdoor type of man.

Well I remember at the time one or 2 reports said the jacket had his name on it others denied and suggested borrowed jacket etc. Well yesterday trying to find where the photo that Justacowgirl posted came from - no luck there I came across photo showing clearly his name embroidered on the jacket. So this was not last minute decision obviously the jacket was intended for this visit whether new or not don't know but what we do know it was not a borrowed jacket worn on the spur of the moment decision because it had his name on it.

Here is the photo that proves it.

I love that British reporter that bugs the 'big shots' at the UN about the oil-for-food. He makes them look like the fools, idiots, and thieves they are.

I'm glad they cover the 'lost kid' stories, because the constant coverage could help the kids. But I get soooo sick of them covering the slimy criminal stories.

The Oscars have a far amount of following in the UK because of movie goers and especially now that DVDs are so popular. Most British people will be aware who has won the major Oscars each year.

Wolfstar, i've told my husband that FR is almost always a step ahead of TV news. And, I agree, while I watch only Fox news, they seem to be more focused on sensationalism than on serious reporting. I emailed them when they had a Fox News Alert showing a hand supposedly belonging to Michael Jackson waving through window shades at the hospital. Told them their Alerts are now like 'the boy who cried wolf', they are not credible. The only show that, I believe, is informative and objective is Brit Hume's show. But, FR rules!

FoxNews's Oil For Food coverage has been the best of anybody's. Also the UN sex scandals. I know the reporter you are talking about, he is good.

There is another reporter with a Brit accent that covers from Iraq for Fox. Sometimes I am not sure just whose side he's on....don't know exactly why.

On one of the afternoon FOX shows tonight they said something like 6 out of 10 Dims were going to watch the Oscars, but only 1 of 8 Reps. I don't know exactly what percentage that calculates out to (brain dead, I am!) but there's got to be some message there.

I like Hunt he went through a bit of strange period where I thought he was being a bit over critical of the administration etc but he seems to have curbed that now again and I enjoy again.

Good find. I remember thinking how smart and sensible the Cheney's looked. And how uncomfortable the others seemed.

The Dimbulbs have such a tenuous grasp on reality, it's no surprise they glorify fantasy. I used to enjoy movies more, but frankly there aren't that many really good ones made these days and the Hollyweirds are so anti-American that we figure we can just keep our money and feel lots better about it.

I think we saw three pictures this past year, none of them up for Oscars. Passion of the Christ (no Oscar nomination there, no-sir-ee), the show about the US hockey team that won the gold medal (Miracles I think was the name). And we saw National Treasure just because we were bored witless one night.

That would be Jonathan Hunt. He kicks butt and takes names
He has done more to expose the UN crap.

good catch, snugs! I agree it did seem like a jacket that Cheney, an outdoor kind of guy, would have.
