'How many more women have to die before this society wakes up?' ["honor" killings]

Shortly before nine o'clock one Monday evening earlier this month, Hatin Sürücü left her five-year-old son asleep in their small apartment in the Tempelhof district of Berlin and made her way to a bus stop in the main Oberlandgarten Strasse.

Minutes later, a volley of pistol shots rang out but no one came to help Mrs Sürücü, 23, who was of Turkish origin. A bus driver discovered her body, with multiple wounds to the head and chest, about 40 minutes later and called the police.

Last week, Mrs Sürücü's three brothers, aged 18 to 25, who were arrested six days after the attack, were formally charged with the murder. They have pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody.

Police are investigating whether Mrs Sürücü was the victim of a so-called "honour killing" after she made the decision to leave the cousin with whom she had been forced into an arranged marriage eight years earlier.

The murder has shocked politicians, police and community leaders, and prompted criticism that successive German governments have ignored ritual injustices within immigrant communities for decades. "How many more women have to die before this society wakes up?" asked Necla Kelek, the author of a controversial book on arranged marriages.

In an open letter last week, the headmaster of the school publicly denounced the attitude of his pupils. Other head teachers in Berlin, however, said that they were not surprised by the children's reaction.

"This type of thinking is latent in their minds," said the head of another predominantly Turkish immigrant school in the district, who asked not to be identified. Their remarks, he said, reminded him of the spontaneous "victory dances" which immigrant pupils at his school had staged after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

Gee whiz forced to marry a cousin (forced incest and in-breeding). These new little Hitler Youth and their NAZI parents are real fine examples of what their religion and culture is all about.

"Honor" killings should be renamed "coward killings".

"Now that at least five have occurred in just four months in Berlin alone, the German authorities and local Turkish leaders are desperately trying to find out why."

DUH! Could it be because of a bunch of sexist, ignorant prigs who, in my opinion, should have the honor thing turned on them and suffer the death of 1,000 cuts - to their privates? OH, I FORGOT. THESE ARE GOOD MUSLIMS, WHO LIVE BY THEIR RULES - FORGET ANY LAWS OF A LAND OR ANYONE ELSE'S RULES.
I am shocked that the German's allow people to migrate into their country and not abide by their laws.

And our society? There have been only isolated cases of "honor killings" in America so far, but we have already seen law enforcement backing off from religously motivated murders (re: the Armanious family--still unsolved and gone from tv or print news)for fear of offending the islamic community.

We as a nation must not allow murder to become a merely a cultural oddity.

But dont the Muslims have freedom of religion?

Killing their sisters is like a Catholic saying his penance.

Crazy Baskets.

What about New Jerseys honor killing, or muslims gone mad, of an entire family? Has that been resolved, or at least charges filed?

It seems to be unusually quiet out that way.

Imagine that.

"...in my opinion, should have the honor thing turned on them and suffer the death of 1,000 cuts - to their privates?"

I think the whole honor thing started because their privates aren't big enough and they know it. They'd never be able to sustain 1,000 cuts there, unless the cuts were microscopic.

The Armanious case was briefly profiled on America's Most Wanted last week, but no law enforcement official spoke about it. And nothing has been in the papers in the NY Metro area. Media black out. Why?

Some of us on FR are following this case and doing whatever we can to not let it get swept under the rug; i.e. phone calls, LTTE, posting here--but ultimately, if law enforcement doesn't pick this up, the family will be denied justice and the killings will go down as a "robbery". What a load of hooey.

I thought everything in Germany was so "Perfect", you know. Particularly when compared to the U.S.

To: Hand em their arse

The sentence is a bit run-on, but there are no glaring grammatical errors that I can see. I'm stumped.

I wondered about that, too. Was hoping someone might fill in that blank.

well, thank you for linking them to this story -- it would seem they can't be mentioned enough. I wonder if Jim Quinn at http://www.Warroom.com might be a useful contact. This is chilling:

From http://www.assistnews.net/Stories/s05020044.htm : According to Jihad Watch the killers had been practicing taqiyya, Islamic deception. They gained the confidence of the Armanious family by pretending to convert to Christianity. When they showed up at the Armanious home that fateful night, they presumably were welcomed in without hesitation, since there was no sign of break in.
