A major to possibly historic snowstorm is now forming in the Gulf of Mexico. This storm will track northeast along the East Coast Monday and Tuesday bringing very heavy snow and near blizzard conditions to many. The exact track is still uncertain at this time, but the big cities along the megalopolis could be in for a very large event. I put together a few maps to track the system, and will add more shortly.

National Radar Summary U.S. Surface Pressure Map and Radar Overlay NWS HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER CAMP SPRINGS MD 132 PM EST SUN FEB 27 2005 QPF DISCUSSION ...ERN STATES... WILL KEEP THIS SHORT AND SWEET. FOR THE MOST PART THE MANUAL DAY1 QPF OVR THE ERN U.S. STRONGLY REFLECTS THE GFS MODEL. THIS MODEL HAS GOOD CONTINUITY NOW FOR THE PAST FEW MODEL RUNS AS OPPOSED TO THE NAM WHICH HAS BEEN ERRATIC AND FOR THE MOST PART WRONG WITH ITS SCENARIO. THAT BEING SAID THE CURRENT GFS IN THE EARLY PART OF ITS 1200 UTC FCST CYCLE DOES NOT HAVE A GOOD HANDLE ON THE DEPTH OF THE GULF LO. TO WHAT EXTENT THIS WILL IMPACT ITS FCST IS UNCERTAIN. ITS FARTHER WEST SFC LO SOLUTION AS COMPARED TO THE UKMET AND THE ECMWF ALSO DOES NOT LEND SUPPORT TO A HIGHLY CONFIDENCE FCST. IN ANY CASE...USED THE GFS FOR THE TIMING OF THE PCPN ASOCTD WITH THIS SYSTEM WHICH HAS TRENDED SLOER FM PREVIOUS RUNS. THE ONLY CORRECTION MADE TO THE GFS...WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR SNOW LOVERS...IS THE ADDITION TO ITS QPF ON THE NW SIDE OF ITS PCPN SHIELD. BELIEVE ITS CURRENT FCST DOES NOT STGLY REFLECT THE TRACK OF THE MID/UPPER LVL CNTR AS DEPICTED BY ITS OWN MASS FIELD FCSTS. LATEST STLT AND RADAR ALREADY INDCS THAT IT HAS MISSED THE PCPN DVLPNG OVR THE UPPER TN VLY TO THE NORTH OF THE MID LVL CIRC AND SUSPECT THIS COULD CONTINUE. PLEASE SEE LATEST WINTER WEATHER PRODUCTS FOR FURTHER INFO CONCERNING FROZEN PCPN.

That's my feeling too. Strangely enough, the model I use the least seems to have the "maximum likelihood" across the board.
I don't want to be "chicken little" and say "Geez, Grandma.. Looks like 20 inches by the feelin in these old bones"

We have to dig with a pickaxe. Local weather forecast says we'll have an inch of rain tonight. Yuck.

My wife took a picture of me using the bulldozer (Cat D3) to move snow away from the barn - all she caught was the top of my hat and the top of the ROPS - and one GIANT snowbank. (Beautiful Galway, NY) 31" measured in the front yard.

Thanks for starting this thread. Usually I get blasted with these storms but I am currently on I-95 about 50 miles north of Savannah, GA! My wife and I are taking a warm vacation this week. I'm typing this on my laptop as my wife drives (Internet in the car is cool). It is pouring rain right now and traffic is down to about 50-55mph. My wife and I were commenting about how these raindrops are going to be snowflakes in our backyard in about 24 more hours.
It will be interesting to see how much snow everybody gets as I drive back up the Eastern Seaboard next weekend. But for now, I'm going to have to prepare myself for a week of 60s and 70s and lots of sunshine!

For us West Coast guys, I think we get more snow out of an inch, maybe as must as a foot per inch, pretty sure that is true for Utah...

I knew what you meant. BTW, when I used to watch local TV I always enjoyed Bob Ryan. As I remember, he and Willard Scott pulled the old switcheroo some 20+ years ago. Ryan was on the Today Show and Willard was a local guy here in the DC area. What I really liked years later was the dust-up between Willard and Brian Gumball. They hated each other.

The NWS is currently predicting 4-8 inches here in southern NH (never mind Boston, where rain will probably cut down accumulations). This is boringly normal, not "historic".
To: Tax-chick
My forecast is now calling for only a chance of rain in the morning.
The ground here is so wet and soft I can't put my car where I normally do, and I only drive a little tiny car........I'd be sunk, literally, if I still had my van.

Yes, that could very well be. I never looked into it. Having skiied both areas, the snow here is infinitely better for that purpose. I remember it took me a long time to grasp the concept of snow elevation, vs. snow line. On the east coast it all hinges on cold air and where the line is between too-warm and cold-enough. Out here it's about what elevation is squeezing out the moisture.
