Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Sunday that peace efforts with the Palestinians would be frozen if they do not crack down on militant groups in the wake of a suicide bombing that killed four people outside a Tel Aviv nightclub Friday.
"There will be no progress politically, and I repeat no political progress, until the Palestinians carry out a determined campaign to destroy the terrorist groups and their infrastructure in the territories," Sharon said before his weekly Cabinet meeting.
Sounds reasonable . Let's hope Abbas is ready for the big game. And ready arrest and put away the terrorists.
Yeah that's what they said in 2000. When will they understand, the only way to make jihadis stop is to keep killing until there are no more jihadis?
It's more than reasonable. The real problem is that the Palestinians have a very different culture. They never did and still do not know what it means to be a nation. They as individuals may very well be a dispossessed people but that does not make up for the fact that they are not a united people by any means. They have an empty suit for a government - real power is in the hands of the local clans, which is an ancient patriarchal social structure - and not any federal government. Or, power is amassed by social/religious groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad among people who do not have a close affiliation with their clan.
Until such time that some kind of federal Palestinian power really takes control and prosecutes murderers to the full extent (and not just make routine arrests for show) there is no hope for peace. They culturally cannot blame themselves for being fractured or inadequate or incapable they will always blame someone else for their faults.
Not all Palestinians are murderers or vengeful but those who want peace have no control over those who don't, and the government itself has no real control over any of them. They are just very culturally different from us in the west, they do not understand what it means to be a nation and we should not pretend as if they are just like us, but angry over their grievances. Those are more excuses - like blaming Hezbullah - pointing fingers at other things/issues/people for their own inadequacies. That is just their culture but that doesn't mean the west - or Israel - should have to put up with it. As far as Israel and the west should be concerned, until they reach our standards of a central authority which enforces all laws equally and seriously there will be no hope for a meaningful peace and cooperation.
Sounds reasonable . Let's hope Abbas is ready for the big game. And ready arrest and put away the terrorists.
There's a better chance of Susan Estrich winning a beauty contest then that happening.
Abbas will have his revolving prison door like Arafat.

Abbas needs to demonstrate he actually has some control over there. Otherwise there's no point in Sharon dealing with him.
I think that's the last time I've seen her.
"Why does Israel or the US have to have a dialog with anyone that states:
"We can't just control the militants or there will be civil war?"
If they can't control them, then why should anyone listen to them?
After all, I can't reign them in either, but nobody is coming to me with a deal...
WARNING: This is a high volume ping list
I hope that this means that his disengagement plan is put on ice, at least until he loses the budget battle and a new government has to be formed.
Israel: "You arabs blow up any more innocent Jews and me might give you an infinitely renewable warning not to do it again!"
Israel: Safer to be in the IDF than a teenager on the street.
Israel: Unafraid to repeatedly appease genocidal demons.
Israel: Ignoring HaShem and history; about to pay a heavy price again.
With the Russian influx, sometimes joining the IDF becomes a way to meet the mean streets and the brutal teenagers thereon.
Sharon should freeze the 'peace" efforts and put the palesites on ice..
