This is the place to discuss any book under the sun.
First of all, my apologies for not getting to this thread until Saturday evening.
Second, as has been suggested by several people on the previous threads, we're only going to make one thread per week, starting on Saturdays. We'll see how that works out.
Third, let's try to pick a topic for the week. Granted, "off-topic" posts are to be expected (and practically mandatory, if reading other threads is any indication).
Fourth, I pulled a lot of names from the previous threads to add to a ping list. As a result, I have a very lengthy ping list. So at this point, I'll add people who ask to be added (and remove those who ask to be removed). My apologies if you don't get added right away.
And, finally, here are the links to the previous two threads. Please! Do NOT add new messages to the older threads! Move on to this one (and the ones to follow in the weeks to come). Thank you.

Tanniker, as I write this, my wife and I are sitting in my library office listening to the last two CDs of the "Digital Fortress."
You should like it, pretty good yarn.
Will check in tomorrow, bedtime (curling up with a good book --- history --- 'King Arthur's Britain').
Good heavens! Were they out of print?
Big Jane Austen fan here.
We're not possessive. We're happy when anyone talks about Tolkien. We'd probably just join right in.
We've had some book threads and have talked about doing them again. But we certainly have no intention (or any right) to get snippy if anyone else starts a discussion thread.
Green's dead, book is out of print, hard to get. I searched for it for months to find a cheaper copy. Finally found one at Powell's for 7.95 plus 3 shipping.
My vote goes to biographies"
I respect that you like bio's.
When I want to know about someone, I usually read the condensed version. I want to know where they stand as a person.
I don't really care to know every detail of their life.
I'm old and my brain is starting to get full.
Mostly I read for enjoyment .
In recent years, the two books I've enjoyed the most we're Swan Song and Unintended Consequences.
Absolutely.... never snippy! :~D
This thread is a great idea. If you have a ping list, please ad me.
Now in direct contravention to your above comment, I invite freepers to read my book, absolutely free. You may access it online via my Profile here on FR. Just click my name at the bottom of this post.
I'd love feedback, and it is really a pretty good story. It is science fiction, but takes place during the present day and has no aliens or other weird stuff in it.
For you statistic hounds: The book has been edited, re-edited, and gone over by independent third parties, so it's fairly polished (there are some computer generated typos I discovered, an artifact of converting it to html). It is 117,000 words long.
Now, back to my regularly scheduled posting...
That is my all time favorite, long before it was made into a movie. The first time I read it I was 15 and listened to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon again and again as I read it. Even today, that music sends me back to Middle Earth. I never did get the hang of Elvish though.
Ew, I'll have to keep an eye out for any book thread you might do over there and join in. Every once in awhile I'll go over to TORN's website and see what they've got going but I'm always late on their book discussions.
Favorites, in order:
1. Science Fiction (Military, Hard Sci.)
2. Military Fiction (Current or Historical)
3. Political (Conservative or Libertarian)
Howsomeever; many of my favorite books don't fit any of these catagories. Delaney's Amber books, Foster's Flinx books, W.E.B. Griffin's Cop books, and of course I just finished the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Check out Foster's "Cyber Way"!
Please add me to your ping list. I love books.
Favorite genres:
1. Mystery fiction
2. Political/Current Events
3. Horror fiction
Please add me to your ping list.
1. History..nonfiction
2. Apparently going along with 1. is biographies
3. Fiction that isn't..mysteries, romance, science fiction..
so, it must mean characters and situationally different
books.
Just finished Born Fighting, by James Webb. It helped me understand the character of the Scots/Irish and why some of my ancestors fought on the Confederate side.
Just had a look at your novel and it's fascinating. Will continue as I have time, I am very much intrigued with it. Congratulations on your hard work, and I hope it pays off.
I finished Born Fighting two weeks ago, it was good and the guy is really p.o.'d with p.c.!
He got a lot of his information from Albion's Seed, an excellent source book.
And how is everybody this Sunday morning?
Capt.(now Adm.)Jack Aubrey and Dr. Maturin are now my new heroes.
I rate P.O'B right up there with Michener.
mark for later
My favorites are:
1. Fantasy/science fiction
2. Political non-fiction
I don't really read too much else for fun. I read a lot of scientific literature, but that's so I can keep up with my field.
I recommend the fantasy author, Terry Goodkind, writer of the Sword of Truth series. He has dead-on accurate analysis of the left and its various factions, but within the setting of a really engaging fantasy story. Sometimes, one of his characters makes such an eloquent statement about a leftist belief that I am left in awe.
I could say something about The Lord of the Rings here, but others already have.
I'm half way thru for the second time. For anyone that loves good writing (wonderful actually) and exciting action PO'B is highly recommended.
